    SOFTBALL

KALAMAZOO - Calvin split a doubleheader and snapped a seven-game losing skid in
the process Wednesday afternoon, falling to Kalamazoo 2-1 in the opener before
coming back for a 5-4 win in the nightcap. With the split, the Knights now
stand 7-10 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA heading into a Saturday doubleheader
    against Albion at home.

In Wednesday's opening game loss, Kalamazoo broke a scoreless tie with two runs
in the bottom of the fourth, using a pair of doubles and a Calvin error to score
twice. Calvin cut the Kalamazoo lead in half in the top of the seventh as
junior Susannah Knust (Grandville) scored from third base on a wild pitch after
reaching base on an error. Senior Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) moved up
to third base on the wild pitch which came with one out. Volkers had also
reached base originally on an error. Volkers was left stranded at third base
however as the Hornets retired the side on a strikeout and groundout to gain the
    one-run win.

Freshman Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern) took the opening game loss despite
allowing just four hits and one earned run. Emery Engers (4-3) picked up the
win for Kalamazoo, holding the Knights to just one hit while striking out two
    batters without a walk.

In game two, Calvin took a 1-0 lead on Volkers' second homerun of the spring.
The Knights added another run in the fifth, using doubles from freshman Tricia
Balkema (Highland, IN) and Knust to score. Kalamazoo answered with a run in the
top of the sixth but the Knights added three insurance runs in the bottom of the
inning on the strength of two hits and three Kalamazoo errors. The insurance
would pay off for the Knights as the Hornets (6-11-1 overall, 1-1 MIAA) rallied
for three runs in the top of the seventh before Cole ended the threat on a
groundout back to the mound with the bases loaded.

Cole (5-4) picked up the win in game two, allowing eight hits and three earned
runs. Calvin finished with nine hits in the win with Cole helping her own cause
the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.

Saturday's doubleheader against Albion will begin at 1:00 pm.

    BASEBALL

Freshman Darrell Heuker's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning
completed one of the longest games in Calvin baseball history as the Knights
prevailed in come-from-behind fashion 6-5 over visiting Orchard Lake St. Mary's
    Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field.

Wednesday's contest began at 3:30 pm and ended at nearly 7:30 with Heuker
(Unity Christian) delivering senior Zac Jackson (Kinsman, OH) from third base
with one out in the 13th inning to end the game.

The victory lifted Calvin's record to 8-7 overall heading into a three-game
    MIAA weekend series at Albion.

Trailing 4-0, Calvin rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh,
scoring its first run on a passed ball and adding two more runs on a pair of
suicide squeeze bunts to pull the Knights to within a run.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's (9-14) came back with a run in the eighth on a solo
homer to left, setting the stage for a dramatic Calvin comeback. In the ninth,
Calvin was down to its last out but back-to-back singles by the brother
combination of Arie Eppinga and Dirk Eppinga of Walnut Creek, California brought
home a run. Seniors Ross Hunderman (Holland Christian) and Aaon Wiers (Chicago,
IL) then walked on successive at-bats to drive in the tying run. The Eagles
were able to finally get out of the jam on a groundout to third base.

In the 10th, Orchard Lake had runners on first and third with one out but
Calvin junior Mark Jansen (Denver, CO) was able to curtail the threat with a
nifty double play at second base as he fielded a sharply batted ball, tagged the
runner heading from first base and then threw to first to complete the double
    play.

Jansen nearly won it in the 12th as he drove a shot to deep right center with
two outs and a runner on base that was snagged by the centerfielder.

Calvin then put the game away in the 13th as Jackson led off with his second
base hit of the game and moved to third when junior Matt DeHoek's (Grand Rapids
Christian) sacrifice bunt was thrown into centerfield in an attempt to force out
Zackson at second. With one out, Heuker was called in to pinch hit and the
freshman delivered with a soft liner to right center to score Jackson with the
    winning run.

Calvin finished the game with 10 hits with Dirk Eppinga also collecting a pair
of hits while junior Andrew Drake (Marion, OH) went 3-for-6, keeping a pair of
Calvin rallies alive with two-out singles. Junior Matt Schmitz (Ionia) also
came up with a stellar effort out the bullpen as he hurled six innings of
shutout relief to pick up the win and run his record to 3-0 on the year.

Calvin will open its weekend series with Albion on Friday with a single
nine-inning game scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm at Joranko Field.

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

Kalamazoo Wednesday afternoon. The Knights will compete at a weekend
