MIKE OTT RECEIEVES MIAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK FOR THIRD TIME
For the third time in his collegiate career, Calvin's Mike Ott has been named
MIAA Pitcher of the Week. A senior from Grand Rapids who prepped at Grand
Rapids City High School but played high school athletics at Grand Rapids Union
High School, Ott picked up his first pitching victory of the year last Friday as
hurled a complete-game 4-1 victory against Olivet. Ott limited the Comets to
just two hits while striking out five and walking just one batter in nine
innings pitched. The lone run allowed by Ott was unearned.
The pitching performance by Ott allowed him to lower his career MIAA ERA to a
sparkling 2.05. Heading into the year, Ott stood fourth on the MIAA career ERA
list.
Ott is currently 1-1 on the year with a team-leading ERA of 1.29. Ott also
leads the Knights in innings pitched (21) while striking out 13 batters against
just three walks.
Ott's victory against Olivet last Friday kicked off a three-game sweep of the
Comets as the Knights won both ends of a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 1-0
and 4-1 to take sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings with an
early 3-0 conference mark.
The defending MIAA champion Knights (7-7) return to action Wednesday when they
host Orchard Lake St. Mary's at 3:30 pm in a non-conference tilt. Calvin will
then return to conference play on Friday when it opens a three-game weekend
series at Albion with Ott expected to start Friday's nine-inning contest.
MORE BASEBALL
Calvin saw its three-game win streak snapped as the Knights were handed a 13-1
defeat at Division II Grand Valley State Tuesday afternoon in Allendale. Grand
Valley scored two runs in the first inning off of Calvin starter Adam
Marcionetti (Oak Park, IL) with Marcionetti then holding the Lakers scoreless
over the next three innings.
Grand Valley (11-7) then scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth
off of Calvin reliever Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) and broke the game open
with five runs in the seventh. The Lakers added two more runs in the eighth off
of Calvin relief pitcher Matt Schmitz (Ionia).
Meanwhile, Grand Valley's pitching staff limited the Knights to just three hits
with Calvin scoring its only run in the seventh inning, using a walk, an error
and a sacrifice fly with senior Jason TeBos (Calvin Christian) driving in
Calvin's lone run.
Marcionetti (1-1) took the loss for Calvin while Grand Valley's Nathan Barden
picked up the win.
