WOMEN'S SWIMMING
BUFFALO, NY - Day two of the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships
brought more success to the Calvin women's swim team as the Knights
earned honorable mention all-american recognition in the 800 freestyle
relay with a school record time of 7:52.33 that allowed the Knights to
finish 14th. The performance shattered the previous school record set in
1999 by nearly two seconds.
Seeded 18th heading into Friday, Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of
sophomore Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian), junior Kate Conrad
(Calvin Christian), sophomore Ann Kuiper (Houghton) and junior Erin
Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian) used the momentum of an All-America
performance in the 200 freestyle relay the night before to move up four
spots and earn honorable mention All-America distinction.
"We swam fast and we feel real good about what we did tonight," said
Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We weren't expected to do much in
this event but I told our women to go out and have fun. They were real
relaxed and the momentum we started yesterday definitely carried over to
tonight. We're hoping to continue the roll tomorrow."
Nagelkirk, Conrad, Kuiper and Kloostra also compete in the 200 medley
relay Friday but did not advance to either the championship or
consolation finals as they finished 19th with a time of 1:53.00. The
Knights were seeded 15th in the event.
The Calvin quartet will compete in the 400 freestyle relay Saturday
where the Knights are seeded seventh. Nagelkirk will also compete in the
100 freestyle Saturday.
Calvin's finish in the 800 freestyle relay allowed the Knights to build
their team score to 30 points, leaving the Knights in 18th place.
Calvin's highest finish at the NCAA III Championships is 21st with 44
points in 1999.
