Calvin Lands 10 on All-MIAA Swim Teams
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The MIAA champion Calvin women's swim team has
landed seven individuals on the All-MIAA women's swimming and diving
team while the Calvin men's team has had three of its members selected
to the All-MIAA men's swimming and diving team.
Named to the All-MIAA women's swimming and diving team from Calvin are
senior Liesje Konyndyk, juniors Erin Kloostra and Kate Conrad and
sophomores Katie Nagelkirk, Mara McGuin, Anne Kuiper and Ginni Baker.
Konyndyk and Kloostra are making their third straight appearance on the
All-MIAA team while Nagelkirk, Kuiper, Conrad and Bakker have been
selected for the second straight year.
Konyndyk is a native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids
Christian High School. At the MIAA Championships last weekend, she
finished third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 500 and 1,650
freestyle. She also swam a leg on Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team
that placed second. Kloostra is also from Grand Rapids and is a native
of Grand Rapids Christian High School. At the conference championships,
she placed second in the 50 freestyle with an NCAA conditional
qualifying time of 24.68. She also took third in the 100 freestyle and
fifth in the 200 freestyle. She also swam on four of Calvin's five
relay teams including Calvin's 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400
freestyle relays that took first place with NCAA conditional qualifying
times.
Conrad is from Grandville and is a graduate of Calvin Christian High
School. At the league meet, she placed second in the 100 freestyle,
third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 200 freestyle. She also
swam on Calvin's 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay
teams. McGuin is from Oak Park, Illionis and is a graduate of Oak Park
River Forest High School. At the MIAA Championships, she placed third
in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM and fifth in the 200 IM.
Kuiper is from Houghton and a graduate of Houghton High School. Last
weekend, Kuiper placed second in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM and fourth
in the 200 breaststroke. She also swam on Calvin's 200 freestyle, 400
freestyle, 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams. Bakker hails from
Portage and is a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School. She was
crowned league champion in the 400 IM last weekend as she took first
place in the event with a time of 4:49.61. Bakker also took sixth in
the 1,650 freestyle and 200 backstroke while also swimming on Calvin's
400 medley relay team that took second with a school record time of
4:08.75. Nagelkirk is from Holland and is a graduate of Holland
Christian High School. Nagelkirk captured the MIAA title in the 50
freestyle last weekend with a school record and NCAA conditional
qualifying time of 24.45. Nagelkirk also captured the 100 freestyle
crown with an NCAA conditional qualifying time of 53.62. In addition,
she took third in the 100 backstroke with a school record time of
1:01.30 while also swimming on Calvin's 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle 800
freestyle and 200 medley relay teams.
As a team, the Calvin women's swimming and diving team took first
place at the MIAA Championships last weekend with 552 points to capture
its first-ever MIAA title. Hope had won the last nine MIAA crowns
including 18 out of the last 22. Over the course of the weekend, the
Calvin women posted seven NCAA conditional qualifying performances and
shattered six school records.
Named to the All-MIAA men's swimming and diving team from Calvin are
junior Chris Veltman, sophomore A.J. Penninga and freshman Brad White.
Veltman is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. A native
of Duarte, California and a graduate of Valley Christian High School,
Veltman took third in the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 200 and 500
freestyle at last week's MIAA Championships. He also swam a leg of
Calvin's MIAA champion 800 freestyle relay team that clocked in with a
school record and NCAA conditional qualifying time of 6:53.36. The
first place performance marked the first time that a Calvin men's relay
team had taken first place at the MIAA Championship meet. He was also a
part of Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that took second with a school
record and NCAA conditional qualifying time of 1:24.79.
Penninga is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids
Christian High School. He is making his second straight appearance on
the All-MIAA team. At the league championships last week, Penninga
shattered a 15-year old school record in the 200 IM with a fifth place
time of 1:57.66. His fifth place time of 47.01 in the 100 freestyle
would also have been a new school record if teammate Brad White had not
surpassed it with a second place and NCAA conditional qualifying time of
46.70. Penninga also took fourth in the 400 IM and swam on Calvin's
MIAA champion 800 freestyle relay team as well as Calvin's 200 freestyle
relay and 400 freestyle relay team that took second with a school record
and NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 3:07.59.
White is from Dayton, Ohio and is a graduate of Dayton Christian High
School. At the MIAA Championships, White established new Calvin records
in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events as well as swimming on Calvin's
record-breaking 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay
teams. White took third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.42
Thursday evening and then came back with a school record and NCAA
conditional qualifying time of 21.35 in a time trial at the conclusion
of the evening. On Friday, he took third in the 200 freestyle with a
school record and NCAA conditional qualifying time of 1:43.17. White
set his final individual record on Saturday as he took second in the 100
freestyle. In Calvin's historic 800 freestyle relay Friday night, White
swam the final leg of the event and held off a furious charge from
Kalamazoo's relay team to allow the Knights to win by two-hundreths of a
second.
As a team, the Calvin men took third at the MIAA Championships with 367
points, a 67.5 point improvement over its third place score of a year
ago. Over the course of the weekend, the Knights shattered six school
records and posted seven NCAA conditional qualifying performances.
