MEN'S BASKETBALL
With the stretch run of the MIAA season in full gear, Calvin remained in
sole possession of first place in the league standings with a 81-67
victory over Adrian Wednesday night in front of more than 2,700 fans at
the Calvin Fieldhouse.
The Calvin win sets up a showdown for first place on Saturday as the
Knights will travel to Albion for a 3:00 pm contest at the Kresge
Gymnasium. Albion improved to 6-3 in the league with a 64-47 win over
Kalamazoo Wednesday, moving into a tie for second place with Hope which
was idle Wednesday. Alma defeated Olivet 83-78 in overtime in the other
MIAA men's contest Wednesday.
Albion will be searching for its first regular season sweep over Calvin
since the 1983-84 season as the Britons handed Calvin a 77-66 defeat on
January 17 at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Calvin (17-4 overall, 7-2 MIAA) used a strong start to propel itself to
the win as the Knights jumped out to a 11-4 lead four minutes into the
contest and then used a 13-4 run to build a 28-15 lead. Adrian (12-9
overall, 4-6 MIAA) would close to within 30-23 on a three-pointer by
sophomore Dan Walter with 6:04 left in the half. The Knights would score
the final 11 points off the half however including a three-pointer by
freshman Phil Visser (Unity Christian) with six seconds left that put
Calvin up 41-23 at halftime.
Adrian closed to within 10 points at 46-36 five minutes into the second
half but would get no closer as the Knights maintained their
double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Sophomore Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) had a huge game to lead
the Knights as he tallied 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting while also
grabbing nine rebounds. Veenstra was also 7-of-10 at the free throw
line and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Sophomore Bryan Foltice
(Tri-unity Christian) had 15 points, four assists and three steals while
senior center Josh Tubergen (Holland Christian) came up with 13 points,
nine rebounds and three assists.
Adrian was led by Walter who pumped in 23 points including five
three-pointers. As a team, Adrian finished 11-of-21 (.524) from
three-point territory but shot just 38.6 percent (22-of-57) overall.
Calvin shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) on the evening and converted
15-of-21 (.714) attempts at the free throw line. Calvin outrebounded
Adrian 38-30 and turned the ball over just nine times.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin moved into a two-way tie for third place in the MIAA standings
with a 74-57 win at Adrian Wednesday night. The Knights (11-10 overall,
6-5 MIAA) are tied for third place with Kalamazoo, one game ahead of
fifth place Olivet which fell to Alma Wednesday.
Calvin led 38-25 at halftime behind 11 first half points from sophomore
Jennifer Plakmeyer (Calvin Christian). Adrian came back to cut the
deficit to six points at 42-36 early in the second half but the Knights
used an 11-3 run fueled by three-pointers from Plakmeyer, sophomore
Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Pam Grimes (South
Christian) to take a 55-41 lead with 10:29 left.
Adrian would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the evening as the
Knights pulled away for the win.
Plakmeyer led Calvin with 16 points including four triples while also
dishing out five assists. Sophomore Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
Christian) was also strong for the Knights with 11 points, six assists
and two steals while Mejeur added 10 points and three assists. In
addition, junior Liz Blevins (Marion) came up with a career-high nine
points off the bench including a three-pointer in the second half while
junior Kendra Toonstra (Calvin Christian) had eight points and six
boards and sophomore Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian) seven
points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Adrian (7-13 overall, 2-9 MIAA) was led by Sarah Vincke who had 12
points while Annie Morton had a double-double with 10 points and a
game-high 14 rebounds.
Calvin shot 40.9 percent overall (27-of-66) and held Adrian to 34.0
percent (18-fo-53) field goal shooting. Calvin also connected on nine
three-point field goal attempts (9-of-26) while Adrian had three
(3-of-17).
Calvin will host Albion Saturday at 3:00 pm at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
