Veenstra named MIAA Player of the Week
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - For the second time this season and for the third in
his career, Calvin sophomore Jeremy Veenstra has been named MIAA Player
of the Week in men's basketball.
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High
School, Veenstra scored a career-high 34 points in a 95-85 victory over
Hope Saturday afternoon while also grabbing 10 rebounds to notch his
10th career double-double. In a 77-68 loss to Albion Wednesday night,
Veenstra came up with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Over the course of the week, the 6-6 forward was 13-of-26 from the
field, 3-of-8 from three-point range, 20-of-23 from the free throw line
and was credited with five assists, three blocks and three steals.
Saturday's victory against Hope allowed the Knights to improve to 13-3
overall and to move into a first place tie in the MIAA standings with
the Flying Dutchmen at 4-1 in conference play.
Veenstra leads Calvin in scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.4
points and 7.4 rebounds a game. In conference play, Veenstra leads the
MIAA in scoring with an average of 21.5 points a game. In league games,
he is also third in the MIAA in rebounding average (8.4) and field goal
percentage (.534). In addition, he is sixth in assists-per-game (3.4);
eighth in free throw percentage (.807) and ninth in blocked
shots-per-game (0.8).
Calvin closes out the first half of its MIAA regular season campaign
Wednesday night when it travels to Alma for a 7:30 pm contest. The
Knights will then host Olivet Saturday at 3:00 pm.
