MEN'S BASKETBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Outside the Calvin Fieldhouse Tuesday night, the
winter winds blew cold and hard with a nasty bite, much like the winds
that blow through the prairie-land of southwest Minnesota.
Inside the Calvin Fieldhouse Tuesday night, Calvin freshman Rob Holleman
lit up the gym down the stretch, much like he did on many a cold wintry
night playing for Southwest Minnesota Christian High School.
With 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, Holleman was the
difference in getting Calvin over the hump Tuesday as the Knights used a
come-from-behind effort to defeat East Beltline rival Cornerstone 82-77.
The victory was Calvin's second in the last 10 days over
nationally-ranked Cornerstone and its 11th in 12 tries dating back to
1986.
With five minutes left, it appeared that Cornerstone might pick up its
first-ever victory at the Calvin Fieldhouse as the Golden Eagles took a
69-62 lead on a three-point shot by senior Mark Zichterman. Calvin then
responded with some three-point shooting of its own sparked by Holleman
as the Chandler, Minnesota native drained back-to-back triples to pull
Calvin to within two points and junior Jon Potvin (Gladstone) followed
with a three-pointer of his own at the 3:17 mark to put Calvin on top
71-69.
Calvin would never trail again, leading by as many as seven points as
the Knights went on to the victory.
Holleman finished the evening with a 5-of-10 shooting performance
including 3-of-3 from three-point range to go with three assists and one
steal while also notching career-highs in points and rebounds to
complete his first career double-double.
Holleman was one of many heroes for Calvin Tuesday evening as sophomores
Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) and Bryan Foltice (Tri-unity
Christian) pumped in 22 points apiece with Foltice also notching a new
career scoring high. Foltice was 6-of-9 from the field including 4-of-5
from three-point range to go with four steals while Veenstra was 9-of-12
from the floor including 2-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc.
Senior Nate Burgess (South Christian) also came up with a valiant effort
as he chalked up nine points, three assists and one steal while playing
the final five minutes with his left elbow swollen the size of a
grapefruit.
Calvin trailed 16-10 midway through the first half but came back to a
36-32 halftime lead with Holleman drilling a 17-foot baseline jumper at
the halftime buzzer to put the Knights up four.
Calvin then went up seven at 44-37 early in the second half, only to see
the Golden Eagles rattle up a 19-9 scoring run to take a 56-53 lead with
11:18 left to play. Cornerstone (7-3) then used eight points from
Zichterman over the next seven minutes to build a 69-62 lead before
Calvin rallied behind the three-point shooting of Holleman and Potvin.
Calvin finished the evening 11-of-18 from three-point land (.611)
including 7-of-10 (.700) in the second half. Calvin (7-1) shot 49.1
percent (27-of-55) overall including 52 percent (13-of-25) in the second
half. Cornerstone finished with a 45.0 percent shooting clip (27-of-60)
including 51.6 percent (16-of-31) in the second half. Calvin again
struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 17-of-27 attempts from
the charity stripe (.630) while Cornerstone was 13-of-16 (.813) at the
line.
Calvin also held a 37-31 rebounding edge with the Knights turning it
over 20 times and Cornerstone 18 times. Zichterman led Cornerstone in
scoring with 18 points while seniors Brian Robinson and John Lanser had
15 and 11 points respectively.
Calvin returns to action Friday when it hosts Grace Bible at 7:30 pm at
the Fieldhouse.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
KANKAKEE, IL - A second half comeback effort came up short as the
Knights fell at NAIA Division I Olivet Nazarene 62-54 Tuesday evening.
Calvin trailed 34-22 at halftime but were able to cut the margin under
double-digits in the second half as the Knights held the host Tigers
(8-2) to 28 percent field goal shooting in the second half. Calvin (3-3)
struggled from the field as well, shooting just 29.6 percent overall
(21-of-71) including just 22.9 percent in the second half.
Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo
Christian) who popped in 10 points off the bench including a pair of
three-point shots. Sophomore Jennifer Plakmeyer (Calvin Christian)
nearly came up with a triple-double for the Knights as she had eight
points, nine rebounds and seven assists, notching career-highs in
rebounds and assists.
Olivet Nazarene was led by Christina Golden who came up with 15 points
while Lanita Thomas had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Calvin outrebounded the Tigers 49-38 but turned the ball over 23 times,
marking the sixth time this year that the Knights have committed more
than 20 turnovers in a game.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Cornerstone at 3:00
pm at the Fieldhouse.
