GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Calvin College senior Rhonda Volkers has been named
to the Great Lakes All-Region team by the American Volleyball Coaches
Association for the third consecutive year.
A native of Zeeland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School,
Volkers is now eligible for All-America consideration.
A 5-10 middle-hitter, Volkers is one of four repeat selections on the
Great Lakes All-Region team as Ashley Layman of Muskingum, Betsy Owens
of Mount St. Joseph and Brandi Stover of Ohio Northern were named to the
Great Lakes All-Region squad for a second straight year.
This past year, Volkers was named the MIAA's MVP for a second straight
year and received first team All-MIAA accolades for a third consecutive
season. She finished the year with 513 kills, setting a new Calvin
season record. In addition, she finished as the all-time Calvin leader
in kills with 1,556 over the course of her four-year career. Volkers
also led Calvin in total blocks (133) and service aces (67) this fall
while also compiling an impressive .305 hitting percentage.
During the year, Volkers was named the MIAA's Player of the Week three
times and was named to all-tournament teams at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh
Invitational and Midwest Invitational. Calvin finished the year with a
27-8 overall record and a 10-2 MIAA mark that was good for a second
place conference finish. The Knights concluded their season in the MIAA
Tournament finals, falling to regular season champion Hope in four
games.
Volkers has now received all-region accolades five times in her Calvin
athletic career as she has received all-region accolades twice in
softball. She has also been named MIAA Player of the Week seven times
in her Calvin athletic career - five times in volleyball and twice in

Volkers is one of three MIAA athletes to be named to the Great Lakes
All-Region team by the AVCA as Amy Brower and Laura Hahnfeld of Hope
were also so honored.
