VOLLEYBALL
Calvin overcame a sluggish team performance to hold off Alma 15-13,
15-8, 11-15, 16-14 Tuesday night at the Cappert Gymnasium. Senior
All-American Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) was anything but
sluggish Tuesday night however as she came up with a triple-double
performance, compiling 14 kills, 13 digs and a a career-high 12 blocks.
Senior Ann Wiersma (Vista, CA) also came up with 19 kills and 15 digs
for the Knights while junior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN)
tossed out 56 assists.
In addition, freshman Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) came up with 13 digs
and three service aces.
Ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin closes out its MIAA
regular season campaign with a 12-2 conference record. The Knights
could still gain a share of the MIAA regular season crown but would need
St. Mary's to upset league-leading Hope Wednesday evening. Calvin is
guaranteed the second seed for the MIAA Tournament scheduled to begin on
November 1.
Calvin will now prepare to host the Midwest Invititional Friday and
Saturday at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin will open play Friday at 3:00
pm against Hanover. The Knights will then meet regionally-ranked DePauw
at 6:30 pm. Calvin and DePauw are two of seven regionally-ranked teams
from the Great Lakes Region scheduled to compete in the Midwest
Invitational. Two-time defending champion Mount St. Joseph will head
into the weekend ranked number-one in the Great Lakes Region and seventh
nationally.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin got back to the .500 mark and improved to 5-3-1 in the MIAA with
a 5-0 victory over Adrian Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin
(8-8-1 overall) led 2-0 at halftime behind first half goals from junior
Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Jon VerMerris
(Western Michigan Christian). Knoester's goal was of highlight-reel
quality as he redirected a cross from senior Marcus Byeman (Redmond, WA)
into the left-hand corner of the goal with a diving header. The
Knoester goal came just 2:57 into the contest. VerMerris then put the
Knights up 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 27th minute.
Calvin's third goal came off the foot of junior Jamie Bassow as the
Grand Haven native made a nifty move up the left wing and blasted a shot
inside the near post ten minutes into the second half. Junior David
VanderLugt (Kalamazoo Christian) and sophomore Steve Bishop (Western
Michigan Christian) completed the scoring for the Knights with
VanderLugt scoring in the 68th minute and Bishop in the 85th minute.
Byeman picked up his second assist of the afternoon in the second half
while junior Chris Borchert (Elmhurst, IL) also picked up a second half
assist for the Knights.
Calvin outshot Adrian (3-11 overall, 1-8 MIAA) 27-6 while junior Matt
Thelen (Grand Haven) and sophomore Justin Bouw (Unity Christian)
combined for the shutout win. Thelen registered four saves while Bouw
had one save.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Alma for a 1:30
pm contest.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin improved to 10-7 overall and to 9-4 in the MIAA with a 5-0
victory at Adrian Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian) paced the Knights with her 11th and 12th goals of
the year while sophomore Sarah Wind (Bellflower, CA) also had a goal and
an assist. Freshman Amanda Bergsma (Calvin Christian) scored her first
collegiate goal as she redirected a corner kick from Wind in the 56th
minute while freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) picked up her eighth goal
of the year as she scored in the 75th minute off an assist from junior
Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian).
Sophomore Carin Erbland (Fairport, NY), junior Larissa Onderlinde
(Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Becky Welsh (Delaware, OH) were also
credited with an assist in the game.
Calvin outshot Adrian 51-4 with sophomore goaltender Leah VanderPloeg
(Unity Christian) posting her fifth shutout of the year with four saves.
Calvin will close out its season on Saturday when it hosts Alma at noon.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams continue to hold their
respective national rankings as the men are ranked number-one and the
women number-two in the latest NCAA Division III Top-25 poll of the
year.
The Calvin men received seven of a possible eight first place votes in
this week's poll while second-ranked Keene State of New Hampshire
received the other first place vote. Middlebury of Vermont remains the
number-one ranked team in the women's poll while Calvin is ranked second
and Wisconsin-Oshkosh is ranked third.
Both Calvin cross country teams will compete at the MIAA Championships
this Saturday at the Whiffletree Golf Course in Concord with Albion
serving as host. The Calvin men will be seeking their 14th consecutive
MIAA title while the Calvin women will be going after their 13th
consecutive league crown. Saturday's competition will begin at 11:00
am.
