    VOLLEYBALL

Calvin overcame a sluggish team performance to hold off Alma 15-13,
15-8, 11-15, 16-14 Tuesday night at the Cappert Gymnasium. Senior
All-American Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) was anything but
sluggish Tuesday night however as she came up with a triple-double
    performance, compiling 14 kills, 13 digs and a a career-high 12 blocks.
Senior Ann Wiersma (Vista, CA) also came up with 19 kills and 15 digs
for the Knights while junior setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN)
    tossed out 56 assists.

In addition, freshman Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) came up with 13 digs
    and three service aces.

Ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin closes out its MIAA
regular season campaign with a 12-2 conference record. The Knights
could still gain a share of the MIAA regular season crown but would need
St. Mary's to upset league-leading Hope Wednesday evening. Calvin is
guaranteed the second seed for the MIAA Tournament scheduled to begin on
    November 1.

Calvin will now prepare to host the Midwest Invititional Friday and
Saturday at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin will open play Friday at 3:00
pm against Hanover. The Knights will then meet regionally-ranked DePauw
at 6:30 pm. Calvin and DePauw are two of seven regionally-ranked teams
from the Great Lakes Region scheduled to compete in the Midwest
Invitational. Two-time defending champion Mount St. Joseph will head
into the weekend ranked number-one in the Great Lakes Region and seventh
    nationally.

    MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin got back to the .500 mark and improved to 5-3-1 in the MIAA with
a 5-0 victory over Adrian Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin
(8-8-1 overall) led 2-0 at halftime behind first half goals from junior
Peter Knoester (Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Jon VerMerris
(Western Michigan Christian). Knoester's goal was of highlight-reel
quality as he redirected a cross from senior Marcus Byeman (Redmond, WA)
into the left-hand corner of the goal with a diving header. The
Knoester goal came just 2:57 into the contest. VerMerris then put the
Knights up 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 27th minute.

Calvin's third goal came off the foot of junior Jamie Bassow as the
Grand Haven native made a nifty move up the left wing and blasted a shot
inside the near post ten minutes into the second half. Junior David
VanderLugt (Kalamazoo Christian) and sophomore Steve Bishop (Western
Michigan Christian) completed the scoring for the Knights with
VanderLugt scoring in the 68th minute and Bishop in the 85th minute.
Byeman picked up his second assist of the afternoon in the second half
while junior Chris Borchert (Elmhurst, IL) also picked up a second half
    assist for the Knights.

Calvin outshot Adrian (3-11 overall, 1-8 MIAA) 27-6 while junior Matt
Thelen (Grand Haven) and sophomore Justin Bouw (Unity Christian)
combined for the shutout win. Thelen registered four saves while Bouw
    had one save.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Alma for a 1:30
    pm contest.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin improved to 10-7 overall and to 9-4 in the MIAA with a 5-0
victory at Adrian Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Tricia Dyk (Western

the year while sophomore Sarah Wind (Bellflower, CA) also had a goal and
an assist. Freshman Amanda Bergsma (Calvin Christian) scored her first
collegiate goal as she redirected a corner kick from Wind in the 56th
minute while freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) picked up her eighth goal
of the year as she scored in the 75th minute off an assist from junior
    Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian).

Sophomore Carin Erbland (Fairport, NY), junior Larissa Onderlinde
(Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Becky Welsh (Delaware, OH) were also
credited with an assist in the game.

Calvin outshot Adrian 51-4 with sophomore goaltender Leah VanderPloeg
(Unity Christian) posting her fifth shutout of the year with four saves.

Calvin will close out its season on Saturday when it hosts Alma at noon.

The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams continue to hold their
respective national rankings as the men are ranked number-one and the
