CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, September 20, 2000
WOMEN'S SOCCER
For the second time in three games, Calvin went down to a 2-1
sudden-death overtime defeat as the Knights bowed to regionally-ranked
Kalamazoo on a rainy day at Calvin Field. The loss dropped Calvin to
2-5 on the year and to 1-2 in the MIAA while Kalamazoo remained unbeaten
in MIAA competition, improving to 2-0 in the league and to 4-3-1
overall.
Kalamazoo's Lydia Raburn scored the game-winning "golden goal" with
4:20 left in the first overtime to allow the Hornets to record the
victory. Heather Peterson ignited the play for the Hornets with a move
from the right corner, creating a 2-on-1 situation at the net. Peterson
then fed Raburn out in front for the game-winner.
The same duo gave Kalamazoo a 1-0 lead 2:22 into the contest with
Peterson collecting a pass from Raburn and blasting a left-footed shot
from 10 yards out into the back of the net. On defense, Kalamazoo
shortened the field with its crafty off-side trap, frustrating the
Calvin offensive attack until late in the contest when Calvin freshman
Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) took a lead pass from senior April Phelps
(Holland Christian) and cranked in a shot from 20 yards out to knot the
score at 1-1.
Calvin continued to threaten in the closing minutes of regulation and
had chances in overtime but were unable to score. The loss marked the
third one-goal defeat in the last four games for the Knights.
Kalamazoo finished with a 26-15 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore
goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) came up with a strong game
in goal for the Knights, collecting 17 saves including a pair of
point-blank stops. Adrian Beller registered nine saves for the
Hornets.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it journeys to Olivet for a
game slated to start at noon.
MEN'S SOCCER
In a game not nearly as lop-sided as the final score would indicate,
Calvin opened its 2000 MIAA campaign with a 3-0 loss at
regionally-ranked Kalamazoo Wednesday afternoon. The two teams battled
through a scoreless first half with Kalamazoo stopping a Calvin penalty
kick in the opening half. Kalamazoo then scored a goal in the 68th and
then in the 83rd minute to take a 2-0 lead. With Calvin pressing up
front, the Hornets added a breakaway goal in the 87th minute to close
out the scoring.
Kalamazoo (4-2 overall, 1-0 MIAA) finished with a 15-12 shots at goal
advantage with junior goaltender Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) picking up
eight saves for Calvin in defeat.
Calvin (3-5 overall, 0-1 MIAA) will attempt to break a two-game losing
streak on Saturday when it hosts Olivet at 1:30 at Calvin Field.
