CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, September 8, 2000
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin gained its first victory of the year and snapped a scoring
drought of more than 200 minutes as the Knights recorded a 6-4 triumph
over visiting Spring Arbor Friday afternoon at Calvin Field. Heading
into the contest, Calvin had not scored a goal since the opening minutes
of the second half of Calvin's season-opener at Rose-Hulman September
1.
Senior forward Jason DeJonge (Western Michigan Christian) provided much
of the firepower as he scored four goals, marking the second four-goal
effort of his career. Juniors David VanderLugt (Kalamazoo Christian)
and Joel Tlachac (Grand Haven) also proved to a solid offensive
combination as the duo combined for a pair of goals and assists.
Calvin led 2-1 at halftime behind a pair of first half goals from
DeJonge. Spring Arbor scored first as Weston Selent tallied at the 7:13
mark of the first half but DeJonge answered with goals in the 14th and
20th minute with senior Jon VerMerris (Western Michigan Christian)
assisting on the first and freshman Mike Standfest (Elk Rapids)
assisting on the second.
Spring Arbor knotted the score at 2-2 on a goal off a corner kick less
than two minutes into the second half. Calvin retook the lead in the
56th minute as Tlachac sent a well-placed pass over to VanderLugt on the
left side of the penalty box. VanderLugt was able to collect the pass
and cranked a shot just inside the right-hand corner of the crossbar.
Spring Arbor answered again however, using a Calvin defensive miscue to
tie the game at 3-3 in the 60th minute but less than two minutes later,
VanderLugt raced up the left wing and sent a hard cross to the far post
that Tlachac was able to full-volley past the Spring Arbor keeper.
DeJonge then added goals in the 63rd and 82nd minute with Spring Arbor
scoring in the 79th minute to complete the scoring. Bishop assisted on
DeJonge's third goal with VerMerris earning his second assist of the
game on DeJonge's goal in the 82nd minute.
Calvin finished with 13-8 shots at goal advantage with junior
goaltender Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) picking up one save for the
Knights.
Calvin will carry a 1-3 record into Saturday's 2:00 pm game against
Milwaukee School of Engineering. Hope defeated MSE 4-1 Friday afternoon
in the other half of the weekend exchange tournament.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin suffered its second consecutive defeat to a nationally-ranked
opponent as visiting Wheaton (2-0) recorded a 3-1 victory over the
Knights (1-2) Friday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Calvin led for most of the first half as sophomore Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian) collected a soft chip pass from junior Larissa
Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian) and flicked a shot past Wheaton
goaltender Kristin Brown to give the Knights a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into
the game.
Wheaton sophomore Rebecca Mouw knotted the score at 1-1 with less than
10 minutes left in the half however, slamming in a shot from 10 yards
out after receiving a lead pass from Kristin Kiefer. Mouw then put
Wheaton up 2-1 10 minutes into the second half, heading in a corner kick
from Padgett Crown. Mouw then set up Julianna Hawkins for a clinching
goal in the 66th minute.
Third-ranked Wheaton held a 40-20 shots at goal advantage on the
Knights including 23-6 in the second half. Calvin held control for the
majority of the first half but Wheaton was able to regain the momentum
late in the first half and sustain it throughout the second half.
Sophomore goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) came up with a
career-high 28 saves for Calvin in defeat while Brown had eight saves
for Wheaton.
Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts Aquinas at noon.
