Program Requirements & Opportunities

• Overview

  This five-year program is an accelerated track that will give you everything you need to practice speech-language pathology or pursue doctoral studies.

  Students entering the BA program must apply to the MA program after completing most of the prerequisite courses (see Admission tab) and must earn at least a 3.0 overall GPA every semester. Students must also meet the essential functions required for professional practice (see FAQs).

  Early Admissions

  High school graduates interested in the Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPAUD) BA-MA Program are eligible for early admission to the SPAUD major at Calvin University.

  Beginning in Academic Year 2021-22, SPAUD is waiving the SAT/ACT requirement for Early Admit status. The students still need to meet and maintain all the other criteria, which are:

  • A composite ACT of equal to or greater than 28 or an SAT critical reading plus math score of equal to or greater than 1320.
  • A high school GPA of 3.8 or higher for US citizens or average marks of 91% or higher from a Canadian high school.
  • Students must specify a SPAUD major on their Calvin University Application and make a deposit by May 1 in order to be awarded early admission status.
  • Beginning with the class that entered the BA-MA program in fall of 2018, to maintain early admission status an early admitted Calvin student must have:
    • Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.7 at the time of application (including the grade from SPAUD 343).
    • Earned at least a B+ in each of the prerequisite SPAUD courses at Calvin.
    • Met the essential functions required to practice as a speech-language pathologist.
    • Successfully completed a criminal background check, fingerprint check, and drug screen in the beginning of the MA program.
    • Failure to meet these requirements means that students will lose early admission status.
  • Admissions: During the Fall semester of the junior year, all students will be sent a link to

    • Submit a personal statement (maximum 500 words) that addresses:
    • Question 1: Describe your professional goals.
    • Question 2: Describe three strengths and three areas of growth as related to your place in a graduate program for speech-language pathology.

  Regular Admissions

  Application to the MA Program for regular admission of undergraduate students at Calvin normally occurs during the junior year. Applications are due on January 15. Applicants who submit after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis only. In order to apply to the SPAUD program, Calvin students must have:

  • At least junior standing at the application due date.
  • Completed the following prerequisite courses or be enrolled in at the application due date: SPAUD 101, 216, 217, 218, 311, 344, 345, Biology 115, Statistics 143, and a Physics or Chemistry course.
  • A minimum overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 at the application due date.
  • Met the essential functions required to practice as a speech-language pathologist (see Essential Functions Requirements in the SPAUD student handbook for more information).

  Retention Requirements for all undergraduate SPAUD Majors

  Students must earn at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) every semester across all courses. If a student earns below a 3.0 GPA in anyone semester, the student will be placed on probation and must earn a 3.0 GPA the following semester. Students may earn below a 3.0 GPA only one time during their tenure at Calvin University. Students may retake SPAUD courses to improve their GPA. Students must also meet the essential functions required to practice as a speech-language pathologist, as outlined in the SPAUD Handbook.
