Cal Thorne

Counselor

Biography

While I have always been drawn toward walking alongside and uplifting others, I had a very narrow view of how I might do that growing up. It wasn’t until attending Calvin University that I was able to see the variety of ways one can use their own personal passions, skills, and values to do good in the world, which is both loving to our neighbors and honoring to God. My love for mental health care began when I was a freshman at Calvin University and dropped my math class and got into whatever core class was available: Psychology 101. This entry-level class was all it took to spark my love for mental health care which continues to grow into an entire career. I had finally found the place where my deep gladness met the world’s great need.

Looking back, it is easy to see the many ways I have been preparing to serve students from all over the country and world who have their own unique challenges, dreams, and difficulties. From looking after my dorm floor as a resident assistant, to spending my summers as a camp counselor, to looking after those struggling with chronic mental health challenges in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, to seeing individual clients for a variety of needs and concerns, the wide breadth of practical experience, diverse clients and coworkers, and unique challenges have helped open my eyes to the variety of concerns my clients might have and the many goals and dreams they may wish to pursue.

As a counselor, it is important to me to provide and protect a safe and empathetic environment for each student who has the courage to ask for help. I believe the keys to your success are within you already but that having someone to share, discuss, and problem solve alongside you can help you learn what those keys are and how you can use them. Regardless of whether you seek help healing, growing, or even thriving, my goal is to be of help as I join with you on your journey.

Aside from my work as a mental health counselor both at Calvin University and in my private practice, I spend much of my time with my wife and our dog, playing board games with friends, and enjoying nature whether it be in our yard, on a hike, or camping.

Education

  • BA, Calvin University, Psychology, 2017
  • MA, Western Michigan University, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, 2024

Professional Experience

I received my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Michigan University and my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Calvin University. I believe in the importance of receiving excellent education and training in such an important field as mental health.

After earning my bachelor's degree, I spent a year and a half working at an overnight summer camp as a camp counselor in the summers and an outdoor educator in the Fall/Winter/Spring. Then, I worked for about four and a half years as a psychiatric technician at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services before going back to school for my masters. After graduating, I was hired by a private counseling group and continue to see individuals with a variety of mental health concerns. During my career I have worked with people from every walk of life from childhood to hospice, and with people with diverse backgrounds, cultures, values, and beliefs; no two people being exactly alike. I am trained to treat a variety of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, as well as mood disorders. I am also passionate about bringing awareness to mental health concerns and working to reduce the harmful stigma associated with mental health issues and receiving mental health care.
