NURS 360: Exploring Culture, Health, Faith, and Nursing - An Off-Campus Experience in Kenya

Apply
Students will learn about nursing in Kenya through hands-on experiences in community clinics and villages, while also exploring Kenyan culture through activities like safari drives and local markets.

During this one in a lifetime experience, students will learn about how nursing practice in Kenya differs from that in the Grand Rapids area. Students will spend a majority of their time in community clinics and local villages to see how differing specialties of nursing, such as Mental Health, Obstetrics and Midwifery, Pediatrics, and Adult Medical Surgical function within a Kenyan community. Students will be able to participate in various hands-on nursing activities and assessments that are not readily available or prominent in the Grand Rapids area. Throughout this entire experience, students will engage in Christian service while learning in a diverse educational community. By being immersed in these various cross-cultural experiences, students will become better equipped to serve all people within God’s Kingdom, within a nursing scope of practice.

When students are not in the clinical setting, they will partake in various cultural activities that will further their knowledge and understanding of the Kenyan culture: Safari drives, animal sanctuaries, worship services, local shopping markets, national museums, tea/coffee farms, and traditional Kenyan music and dance performances.

The price for this trip is all-inclusive. However, there are some additional expenses you may incur for the following: Passport, necessary vaccines and preventative medications, any personal shopping, 5 out-of-pocket lunches (totaling about $50), and snacks for lunch during clinical days.
