An expert on the black church will speak at Calvin College in July on whiteness as a theological problem.

Willie Jennings, an ordained minister and professor at Duke University Divinity School, will deliver a talk titled "Visible Signs/Invisible Works: Whiteness as a Theological Problem" on Wednesday, July 19 at 7:30 pm in Gezon Auditorium.

The event is free and open to all.

Jennings, a Grand Rapids native and graduate of Calvin, will be in town for "A Consultation of Afro-Christian Scholars in Higher Education," an annual event hosted by Calvin which brings together invited participants for conversations about the intersections of the Christian faith with the scholarly disciplines from an Afro-Christian perspective.

Jennings is co-director of the Consultation with Barbara Omolade of Calvin.

In his work at Duke Divinity School, Jennings focuses on systematic theology and black church and cultural studies as well as liberation theologies, cultural identities and anthropology.
