Calvin plans Earth Week events
Calvin College will join forces with Prison Fellowship this month for a stirring exhibition of art.
"Where Love and Justice Meet" will feature some 20 pieces of art produced by men and women incarcerated at Michigan prisons.
The work will be displayed from April 13 to April 27 on the second floor of the Fine Arts Center at Calvin.
There will be a reception on Tuesday, April 24 from 7 to 9 pm which will include a short talk at 7:15 pm by special guest speaker Marci Christian, art program director at the prison in Ionia.
Also at that reception those in attendance will be allowed to cast their vote for the art which they think shoud represent the state at the national competition (and possibly then advance to the international show scheduled for July 2007 in Toronto).
Calvin College professor Lisa VanArragon is working with 2006 Calvin graduate Ginger Aiken on the exhibition (Aiken now works for Prison Fellowship as their Campus Ministry Coordinator).
VanArragon says she is excited about bringing the show to campus.
""This art can teach us a lot about how people make meaning of their lives ," she says, "and how art can communicate meaning. It's a really good opportunity for our students, but also for people beyond our campus."
