Calvin College has named five new members of its Board of Trustees.

They are:

• Ronald Baylor, a lawyer from Kalamazoo
• Mary Poel Kruis, a physician from New Mexico
• Alyce Oosterhuis, a retired professor from Alberta
• Michelle VanDyke, a bank president from Grand Rapids
• Ruth Vis, a public affairs specialist from Grand Rapids

The 31-member Calvin Board of Trustees meets three times annually, usually on the Calvin campus, with those meetings taking place in October, February and May each year.

BIOS OF NEW CALVIN BOARD MEMBERS

Ronald Baylor has practiced law for 25 years and has been a partner at Miller, Canfield, Paddock, and Stone, P.L.C., in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for 18 years, primarily in the areas of environmental and regulatory law (he is named in Best Lawyers in America for Environmental Law 2005-2006). He has served on the Boards of Junior Achievement, Second Impressions Thrift Store, the Calvin Alumni Association, Kalamazoo Christian Schools, Chamber of Commerce, Pine Rest Counseling Center, Friends of Kal-Haven Trail, Inc., and the Statewide Public Advisory Council of Michigan (Great Lakes Areas of Concern).

Mary Poel Kruis is a pediatrician by specialty and currently serves as Vice President for Medical Affairs at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Services in Gallup, New Mexico. She has served previously as a board member at Rehoboth Christian School and at Dordt College. Her current activities include membership on the Rehoboth Christian High School board; the Nursing Advisory Committee for the University of New Mexico, Gallup, and on the Education Committee of the New Mexico Pediatric Society. She is currently completing her term as a deacon at Bethany CRC in Gallup.

Alyce Oosterhuis is professor emerita at King’s University College. She has served previously on numerous boards and committees including Program Coordinator for the Association of Independent Schools in Alberta, board member of the Pastoral Care Institute of Edmonton, chair of St. Stephen’s Doctoral Ministry Committee, and chair of the Edmonton Society for Christian Education. She has also been a board member and secretary for Christian Schools International (CSI) and the CSI District II Director. She also has served as a Senator for the Institute of Christian Studies since 1996.

Michelle Van Dyke joined Old Kent Banking as an intern just prior to her May 1985 Calvin graduation. She has since advanced into management, moving from assistant vice president to president of Old Kent Mortgage Company and then executive vice president of Fifth Third Bank Western Michigan. In June 2004 she was appointed President and CEO of Fifth Third Bank, Western Michigan. She serves on a number of local boards including Davenport University, Spectrum Health Hospitals and Downtown Development Authority. She co-chaired the $16.3 million capital campaign for the new David D. Hunting YMCA and is involved in fund-raising for the American Cancer Society.

Ruth Vis has since 1977 served in various capacities for BankOne, initially in the audit division, and currently serves as BankOne's corporate grantmaker and public affairs officer in West Michigan. She has been a member of the Calvin Alumni Choir, served on the Calvin Around Town committee and been involved with Calvin's Discovery Club Fellowship program for pre-college students. She is currently vice-chair of the Home Repair Services Board and a member of the Public Relations Society of America. She has also served on the board of the Grand Rapids Calvin Alumni Chapter, East Grand Rapids Aquatics, and the Grand Rapids Symphony Volunteer Association.
