Sustainability Showcase Keynote: Achieving Net Zero

  • Thu, Dec 12, 2024
  • 4:00 pm–4:40 pm

Covenant Fine Arts Recital Hall

In September 2024, the World Economic Forum reported that the manufacturing sector is responsible for 20% of all global carbon emissions. And yet manufacturing companies' emissions are dwarfed by emissions from their supply chain. Thus, tackling the climate crisis will require manufacturers to not only eliminate carbon emissions from their own operations, but also require their suppliers do so as well. This year Steelcase, a global furniture manufacturing and design company headquartered in Grand Rapids, took the bold step to do just that. By 2050, Steelcase has committed to emitting at least 90% fewer greenhouse gases from its own operations and its supply chain than were emitted in 2019, and to invest in projects to remove carbon from the atmosphere to offset any remaining balance. The keynote speech will provide a peek into into the many creative efforts that Steelcase will be undertaking to meet this important challenge.

The Sustainability Showcase is the end-of-semester, interdisciplinary opportunity for students who complete a classroom project on a sustainability-related topic to share conclusions and findings.

Keynote Speakers:

Dr. Becky R. Haney, ESG Data + Reporting Program Manager at Steelcase

Since May 2022, Dr. Haney has led the ESG reporting team responsible for collecting, verifying, and reporting enterprise-wide metrics, progress, goals, and strategies related to Steelcase impact on people and planet. Before then, Dr. Haney co-chaired the Political Science & Economics department at Calvin and led several sustainability initiatives at Calvin, including Calvin's own STARS (Sustainability Tracking and Rating System) reporting team and serving on the EESC committee. She co-developed and co-taught the Economics of Energy and Sustainability course with Calvin engineering professor Matt Heun, which included a semester long team project that simulated sustainable product design and manufacturing challenges for a large, global corporation.

Maeve Tropf, Net-Zero Strategy and Sustainability Customer Engagement Manager at Steelcase

Maeve leads the net-zero strategy team at Steelcase Inc., where she develops and implements the company’s corporate climate change mitigation strategy. This includes achieving operational carbon neutrality and progressing against an ambitious science-based net-zero target. Maeve also serves as Steelcase's climate and energy specialist for corporate government affairs.
