Dr. Sung Soo Lim

Associate Professor

Biography

Professor Lim was born and grew up in South Korea but completed all his undergraduate and graduate studies in the United States. He has been teaching Economics at Calvin University since 2018. Prior to joining Calvin, he held academic positions at the American University in Dubai and Loyola University Maryland. 

He also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis during the recovery following the Great Recession, where he played a crucial role in developing briefing materials on U.S. economic conditions that provided policy support for the Bank President and Board of Directors. 

In addition to his academic work, Professor Lim is actively involved in public speaking and consulting. He has delivered lectures for multinational companies such as Hyundai Motor Group and SK Group. 

On a personal level, Professor Lim enjoys traveling, photography, and watching European soccer matches. He has traveled to nearly 20 countries. He and his wife, Eunice, have three children, all avid soccer players.

Academic Interests

Professor Lim's research primarily centers on international economic development, with a broad intellectual curiosity that extends across multiple disciplines. His recent work delves into the intriguing intersection between economics and psychology, exploring how human behavior influences economic decisions. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers, with a special focus on improving the well-being of individuals in underprivileged communities and rapidly developing regions, particularly in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. His work has appeared in journals such as Journal of Development Studies, World Development, Review of Development Economics, Journal of International Development, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, International Journal of Educational Development, Journal of Happiness Studies, Journal of Promotion Management, and Social Indicators Research. Additionally, he has co-authored a book titled Unlocking the Future Economy: Camels, Mercedes, and Tesla (in Korean), which explores the past, present, and future of Middle Eastern economies.
