The Kuyers Institute is pleased to announce a new project funded by a grant from the Templeton Religion Trust. During 2025-2026, the Giving Hope Project will develop new research tools for exploring students’ understanding and experience of hope and new learning resources for teachers to strengthen their own hope and their ability to communicate about hope with their students. The project team consists of David I. Smith (Kuyers Institute, Calvin University), Kendra Thomas and Robert Henry (Hope College), Roman Williams (Interfaith Photovoice), and Rachael Baker (NetVUE). The team draws together pedagogical, psychological, and sociological expertise. Our focus is on hope as a virtue, as something more than confidence, optimism, or a sense of efficacy. During this initial phase, we will be recruiting school partners for a second phase of the project which, if funded, will involve school-based research and support and intensive work with teachers in secondary schools and the publication of fresh findings and resources.
