Summary: The Calvin Theatre Company (CTC) will hold the North American premiere of the play "Backborn" as a part of the Festival of Faith and Writing, beginning Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Renowned Hungarian playwright, Andras Visky, will hold the North American premiere of his latest play, "Backborn," as part of this year's Festival of Faith and Writing. Visky, a Calvin communication arts and sciences professor, is the current holder of the William Spoelhof Teacher-Scholar-in-Residence Chair.

His play received rave reviews at France's Festival D'Avignon in December 2009 and will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on April 15-17 and April 22-24, in Calvin's Lab Theatre, located in the college's Spoelhof Center. The play will also have two additional performances during the Festival.

The play "is an existential comedy that asks how we might transcend the destruction of humanity. An everyman figure, returning home from a prison camp, finds himself unable to re-integrate into culture and society. Set in the aftermath of WWII, this play explores the meaning of imprisonment, and how the Grace of relationships gives us hope and sustains us through the bleakest moments of existence," reads the CTC Web site.

To purchase tickets to the play, contact the Calvin box office at 616-526-6282.

"Backborn" is just one component of this year's Festival of Faith and Writing held Thursday through Saturday, April 15-17, 2010.

This year's line-up of 54 speakers includes award-winning authors, filmmakers, photographers, illustrators and educators; numerous national book award winners; "New York Times" bestselling authors; national poetry award recipients and Newbery Award winners, to name a few.

Festival planners are also trying something new this year, offering Festival in the City, a series of events that are free and open to the public at the Ladies Literary Club in downtown Grand Rapids. Author Michael Perry, poet Kevin Young and filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson will be featured at the downtown series.

On Calvin's campus, children's author Kate DiCamillo will be doing a reading and book signing that is free and open to the public. Families and school groups are especially welcome.
