Calvin College will receive a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant worth $266,000 to expand and improve hymnary.org, an online database of hymn texts and tunes. The grant money will be used in part to incorporate the Dictionary of North American Hymnology, a comprehensive index of hymnals published in North America to 1978.

Currently, the site houses more than a million hymn instances, which provide basic information on each hymn; including title, author, date published, etc. The NEH grant will allow for a portion of those hymns to be scanned online, giving users the ability to print out texts and scores for thousands of hymns.

Director of Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL) Harry Plantinga submitted the proposal, "A Comprehensive Index of North American Hymnals." The two-year project will bring together an array of collaborators, including The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW), The Ohio State University and Princeton Theological Seminary (PTS). PTS has one of the best collections of hymnology books in the country and this grant will allow for a portion of those to be put online at hymnary.org.

The project has been given the "We the People" designation from NEH, which recognizes those projects that encourage and strengthen the teaching, study and understanding of American history and culture.
