Softball Takes Two From Wheaton

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a sweep on the Thunder of Wheaton on Wednesday. The Knights topped Wheaton 2-1 and 9-6 on Wednesday evening. The magic number remains at one for Calvin to clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament with Alma sweeping No. 20 Hope.
Junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning on Wednesday.
The Knights struck first in the eighth inning with a single through the left side of the infield from senior Kaley Frank Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) that scored senior Kimiko Hinastsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo). Junior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) was then able to get freshman Ellie Borst home safely.
The Thunder tallied one run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Ellie Borst recorded her 13th victory of the season and tallied two strikeouts in the three innings of relief.
Sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) tallied three hits in her return to the land of Lincoln.
The Knights wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard in game two.
In the first inning, freshman Grace Stock singled to center field to score junior Maddie DeGroot. Anna Gernant then singled through the left side of the infield to score senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Kayla Groen closed the first inning scoring with a double to center field that scored sophomore Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).
Kaley Frank added two more runs in the fourth inning on a single through the left side of the infield to get Maddie DeGroot and freshman Kennedy Geiger (Clarksville, Mich./Lake Odessa) across home plate. Anna Gernant added another run on a single through the left side of the infield to score sophomore Bre Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian).
Wheaton responded with two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning to cut into the Calvin lead.
The Maroon and Gold stopped the skid in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Grace Stock had a hard-hit triple to left field to score Jessica Brasser and the Frank singled to center to score Stock.
Wheaton would not go away and scored three more runs in the sixth inning.
Ellie Borst and the Knights closed the door on Wheaton in the seventh inning with a 1-2-3 inning.
Freshman Bri Leegwater (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) recorded her second victory of the year in game two. Ellie Borst fanned four batters in two innings of work.
Maddie DeGroot and Jessica Brasser both finished with three hits in game two.
Calvin returns to play on Friday at Olivet.
