Women's Lacrosse Trips Up Trine;
Women's Tennis Tops Saint Mary's - Clinches #2 Seed for MIAA Tournament;
Baseball Downed by Defiance

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 16, Trine 7

ANGOLA, Ind. - ANGOLA, Ind. - For the second-straight year, the Calvin women's lacrosse team has posted a perfect 8-0 record in MIAA play. The Knights closed the MIAA regular season with a 16-7 victory at Trine. Calvin improves to 10-5 on the season and Trine falls to 5-10 and 3-4 in MIAA action. Trine is still alive in the MIAA race and will play Hope for the final spot in the tournament. Calvin is riding the longest winning streak in MIAA history, winning the last 22 MIAA games. The Knights have won 24 of their last 25 MIAA games.

"I'm very happy with how the team played today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "They came out strong and took control early. We became more efficient in the second half and did a good job of protecting our possessions. We're excited to get back to practice tomorrow and begin preparation for the MIAA semifinals."

The Thunder struck first on Wednesday with a goal on a free position shot.

The Knights countered the goal with a 7-0 run.

Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe / Chisipite Senior School) scored the first two Calvin goals.

25 seconds later, senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) found the back of the net.

Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) joined in on the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) struck on a free position shot to make it a 5-0 game.

Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) and junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) both scored on the tail end of the run.

After a Thunder goal, the Knights responded with a pair of Emma goals. Emma Verrett and Emma Hall both snuck the ball past the Trine keeper.

Trine scored the final two goals of the half to head into halftime at 9-4.

Calvin opened the second half on a 5-1 run. Emma Tilma started the scoring off a pass from Kelly Pepper. Amanda Davio and Emma Verrett also scored in the run.

With 17:13 left in the game, Grace Einfeld found the back of the net. Emma Hall scored the final Calvin goal of the game, up a player.

Emma Tilma finished with a game-high five goals.

Amanda Davio and Emma Verrett both scored three goals on Wednesday. Davio also led the Knights with five ground balls. Verrett with five draw controls and team-high two caused turnovers.

Junior Alyssa Gagnon (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) recorded a game-high six draw controls.

Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo. / Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) finished with three saves.

Calvin outshot the Thunder on Wednesday, 44-14. Trine finished with 28 turnovers.

Calvin returns to play on Wednesday in the MIAA semifinals.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Saint Mary's 4

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team picked up a big victory over Saint Mary's on senior day. The Knights secured a home match in the MIAA Tournament against Saint Mary's with the 5-4 victory. With the win, Calvin improves to 13-5 and 6-1 in the MIAA. Saint Mary's falls to 11-7 and 5-2 in MIAA action.

"This was a really big win for us," said head coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We knew what was on the line today and we went out and did what we had to do. We did a great job in doubles today, possibly the best we have played all year. It was nice to win on senior day, to make sure we once again play on our courts."

The freshman duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) got uninvited from the Davy family reunion with an 8-2 victory over Megan and Monica Davy at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./homeschool) and sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) celebrated senior day with senior day with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles over Lilly Chamberlin and Maddie Minaudo.

Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) rallied from behind to defeat Elizabeth Preister and Kelsey Kopf at No. 3 doubles, 9-8.

Anna Asfour made quick work of Kelsey Kopf at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Leah Newhof clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Monica Davy at No. 1 singles.

The Belles won matches at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 4 singles to cut into the lead.

After training in the first set 2-5, Madeline Brouwer bounced back to take the first set from Megan Davy at No. 2 singles, 7-6. Brouwer then fell in the second set, 5-57 and in the third-set tiebreaker.

Calvin closes the regular season on Saturday at Kalamazoo.

The Knights will host the Belles in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on May 3.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin dropped an 11-8 non-conference game to visiting Defiance University Wednesday afternoon.

Calvin (11-19) used seven pitchers in Wednesday's loss. Defiance (9-16) pounded out 14 hits against the Calvin pitching staff and took the lead for good with a two-run sixth inning.

Calvin led 3-0 after two shutout innings by freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who started the game on the hill for the Knights.

Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) had an RBI triple and junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) and RBI single in the first. Freshman Joey Lepidi (Grosse Ille, Mich./Grosse Ille HS) added a sacrifice fly in the second.

The game then see-sawed back and forth. Defiance struck for five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-3 lead. Calvin came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-5 advantage. Pena had an RBI double in Calvin's three-run inning.

Pena continued his big day with an RBI single in the fourth to give the Knights a 7-5 lead.

Defiance came back with a run in the fifth and then scored two in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. The Yellow Jackets added three insurance runs in the seventh to build an 11-7 lead.

Sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) collected an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to get a run back but the Knights left the bases full to end the inning.

Calvin placed two runners aboard in the ninth but could not score.

Pena led a 10-hit Calvin attack by going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Hyndiuk also had two hits for the Knights. Sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had a triple and an RBI on the afternoon.

Calvin will open a four-game conference series with Olivet on Thursday. The Knights will travel to Olivet Thursday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will then host the Comets in a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
