GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep over conference foe Albion Saturday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
Prior to the twinbill, Calvin (22-5 overall, 7-3 MIAA) honored seniors Jessica Brasser (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) and Kimiko Hinatsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo HS) who were playing in their final home games.
Calvin junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Ia./Valley HS) tossed her second no-hitter of the season and the fourth of her career in the opener. Freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) followed with a three-hit shutout in game two.
In game one, Calvin put together a 15-hit attack with Brasser, junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) collecting three hits apiece.

Frank and junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had two hits apiece with Colon also driving in three runs. DeGroot, Brasser, Colon, Newman and sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln Way East HS) all had doubles.
Gernant (8-3) struck out 11 Albion batters without a walk. Two Albion runners reached base on Calvin errors.
In game two, Albion traded goose eggs with Calvin through four innings before the Knights broke through for a four-run fifth and added single runs in the sixth and seventh to provide Borst an ample supply of run support.
Borst (11-2) struck out seven batters, walked two and scattered three hits. Brasser, freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) and junior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) all had two hits apiece. Frank had a two-run RBI single in the fifth. Brasser, Stock and Colon all batted in a run.
"It was a good day for our team because we picked up two more important conference wins," said Calvin softball coach Becky Hilgert. "We came ready to play and were aggressive at the plate. Anna and Ellie gave us two great pitching performances. Right now we are just focused on the next game in front of us. Our league is as challenging as any in the country right now so our focus needs to be on the task at hand."
Calvin returns to action on Monday when it travels to rival Hope for a key conference doubleheader slated to start at 4 p.m.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in eight innings and then dropping the nightcap 6-5.
The Hornets used late-inning rallies in both games to sting the Knights twice.
In game one, Calvin (11-17 overall, 10-10 MIAA) led 3-1 after five innings of play. Freshman Mitch Mustert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) doubled in a run in the second. Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) roped an RBI single in the third and followed with an RBI double in the fifth.
Kalamazoo's Alex Fultz belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 3-3.
The Hornets then brought in pitching ace Ryan Orr for the final two innings. Calvin remained in the game by stranding a pair of Kalamazoo runners in the bottom of the seventh but the Hornets broke through with a two-out rally in the eighth using sandwiching two hits around a Calvin error to plate the game-winning run.
Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) took the hard-luck loss in relief of sophomore starter Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). VanDuyn went the first six innings and scattered five hits.
Pena had two of Calvin's seven hits. Sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS), freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS), Pena and Mustert all had doubles.
Pena and Mustert also each stole a base.
In game two, Calvin built a 5-2 lead through five innings. Calvin picked up two runs in the second as sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had a sacrifice fly and senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) had a RBI single. In the fifth, sophomore Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS) had a run-scoring single and Marshall doubled home two more. The Hornets choked off more damage however by throwing a Calvin runner out at the plate attempting to score after tagging up on a fly ball.
Calvin's lead did not last as Kalamazoo broke through with four runs on five hits in the sixth inning including a two-out bases-loaded that brought home the go-ahead run.
Kalamazoo sealed the win by retiring the Knights in order in the top of the seventh.
Kalamazoo outhit Calvin 15-8 in the game two win. Walker (1-5) took the loss in relief with the game-winning run proving to be an unearned run.
