WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 16, St. Mary's 15 (OT)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Calvin women's lacrosse became the first team since 2013 to repeat as MIAA champions in women's lacrosse. The Knights secured at least a share of the title with a thrilling 16-15 overtime victory at Saint Mary's. The 16-15 ringing of the Belles propels Calvin to 9-5 and 7-0 in the MIAA. Saint Mary's falls to 10-4 and 5-1 in MIAA play.

"I thought we played really well today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "Hats off to Saint Mary's; that was one of our toughest games of the year. They came out and really made us work. It is a great honor to win the conference and we are excited to host. We love having the home crowd and the atmosphere."

Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) opened the scoring on Saturday four minutes into the game. Junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills) was given the assist.

Junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) snuck the ball past the Belles keeper on a free position shot.

Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe / Chisipite Senior School) went coast to coast to make it 3-0.

The Belles rang off the next two goals to make it 3-2.

Emma Tilma snapped the streak and fooled the goalie off a pass from Emma Verrett.

Saint Mary's tied the game with two-straight goals.

Lauryn Slachter tallied her second goal to give the Knights the lead with 12:09 left in the half.

After a Saint Mary's goal, The Knights gained some separation with three-straight goals. Kelly Pepper scored two of the goals, with Emma Tilma scoring the other.

Saint Mary's did not back down and closed the half on a 3-1 run. The lone Calvin goal came from Emma Tilma.

The Knights were able to gain a majority of the possession to start the second half. Emma Hall started the half scoring two goals, with Kelly Pepper earning the assist on both goals.

The Belles countered with two goals of their own.

After a goal from Emma Tilma, the Belles tied the game at 12.

11 seconds later, Emma Tilma found the back of the net as the Knights quickly marched down the field. Calvin scored again 24 seconds later off the stick of Kelly Pepper.

The Belles closed the half on a 3-1 run to tie the game. Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich. /Okemos) had the Calvin goal.

Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo. / Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) kept the Knights alive with a critical save. With 10 seconds left in regular, Chalfant stopped a free position shot from Erin Doyle to keep the Knights alive.

The teams finished regulation tied at 15 and the Knights played their first overtime game since 2016, when Calvin defeated Transylvania.

Amanda Davio came up with a big draw control to give the Knights the ball in sudden-death overtime. After shots from Emma Hall and Amanda Davio, Davio became the hero with a goal on a free position shot to give the Knights the victory. Lauryn Slachter and Emma Tilma came up with ground balls in overtime to keep the ball with Calvin.

"It was definitely very scary," said Davio. "Nerves were all over the place. We all pulled through as a team, I could not have done that without everyone else. Today was a team effort and I am proud to be a part of this team."

Kelly Pepper led all players with eight points on three goals and five assists.

Emma Tilma finished with a career-high six goals.

Ellis Chalfant recorded 10 saves in the victory.

Amanda Davio led the Knights with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Madeline Baas led the Maroon and Gold with seven draw controls.

Calvin outshot Saint Mary's 34-33, with the last shot proving to be critical.

Saint Mary's finished with 28 turnovers.

In a game where possession was so important, Calvin had 34 ground balls to 27 for Saint Mary's.

With the victory, Calvin will be the top seed in the MIAA Tournament and will face either Hope or Trine. Albion and Saint Mary's will play in the other game.

Calvin closes the regular season on Wednesday at Trine.

MEN'S LACROSSE

ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team came up short on Friday evening at Alma. The Scots walked away with a 6-4 victory that sent the Knights to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in MIAA play. Alma improves to 6-9 in 2018 and 3-2 in MIAA action.

Junior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) started the scoring in the first quarter. Foster spun past the defender and fooled the Alma keeper on the left side.

Alma tied the game up in the second quarter.

The Knights responded with a goal from freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central). The Scots responded with a goal in the final minute of the half to even the game at two at halftime.

Senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Calif./Palm Desert) opened the scoring in the third quarter with a shot above the keeper.

Alma responded again with a goal to tie the game at three.

With 1:06 left in the third quarter, junior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) whipped the ball past the Alma goalie to give the Knights the lead.

The Scots scored three goals in the fourth quarter to walk away with the victory.

Senior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led the Knights with eight ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Freshman Mitchel Wong (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) recorded 19 saves on Friday evening.

Calvin returns to play on Tuesday at Trine.

MEN'S GOLF

WEST OLIVE, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team recorded a second-place finish in the first of three MIAA Automatic Qualifiers on Saturday afternoon. The Knights finished in second place at 285 strokes. No. 11 Hope finished first with 284. The next two rounds will be played at Calvin.

"We had some good rounds today," said Dr. Brian Bolt. "We are right in the middle of the hunt and we have two big rounds next week. We are looking forward to playing on our home course."

Senior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich. / Oakland Christian) finished tied for second place at 70 strokes.

Senior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Sam Holland (Novi, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) finished for fifth place at 71 strokes.

Junior Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a round of 73 strokes on Saturday.

Junior Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich. / Brandywine) finished the day with 82 strokes.

Josh Gibson of Hope was the medalist at 67 strokes.

Calvin returns to action on Friday for the second round at Watermark Country Club.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team defeated home court on Saturday afternoon. The Knights defeated the visiting Thunder of Trine 8-1 to improve to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.

"It is always nice to play outside and win in the MIAA," said head coach Kevin VanHaitsma. "We were able to do both. I was pleased with our play and we now have to focus on two big matches, next week."

The freshman duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) opened the match with an 8-1 victory over Madison Hatkevich and Zoe Laubach at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich. / Home school) and sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) shot down Kinnsey Pass and Andrea Jordan at No. 2 doubles, 8-1.

Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich. / Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) finished doubles play with an 8-5 victory over Kyra Braun and Katie Simon at No. 3 doubles.

Leah Newhof made quick work of Madison Hatkevich at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Anna Asfour brought out the broom on court three with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kinnsey Pass.

Brittney Statema sank Katie Simon at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Madeline Brouwer bounced Zoe Laubach at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Lark Foote rallied at No. 4 singles on Saturday, coming from behind to defeat Theresa Magenheimer, 3-6, 6-0, 10-5.

The Thunder zapped Calvin at No. 5 singles to finish the match.

The Knights host Saint Mary's on Wednesday for a match that has major implications in the MIAA race.
