MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Adrian 2
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team closed the regular season with a 7-2 victory over Adrian. With the victory, Calvin clinches the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Calvin finishes the regular season at 16-3 and 6-1 in MIAA play. Adrian falls to 8-9 and 4-3 in MIAA play. After winning his 200th victory with Calvin men's tennis on Wednesday, John Ross won his 500th victory at Calvin with 201 victories with men's tennis and 299 victories with the women's basketball program.
"It is a really nice win to play at home," said Calvin head coach John Ross. "It was a big win in front of our home fans. Adrian is a great opponent. It was a wonderful match and it was exciting. The biggest credit goes to our athletic training staff. We have had players who have been struggling with injuries and they were all able to play today."
The Bulldogs bit the Knights at No. 2 doubles to start the match.
Senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) edged Ronald Ducharme and Jon Rhind at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.
Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) bashed Tanner Wilcox and Kyle Haines at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Jason Wolters rolled over Kyle Haines at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) broke Ronald Ducharme at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
With the match tightening, Max Stallings secured the victory at No. 6 singles. Stallings sank Jon Rhind, 7-6, 6-2.
Adrian earned its second point at No. 2 singles.
David Brown and Matt Van Winkle closed senior day with a pair of three-set victories. Brown bounced Nathan Waterbury, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Van Winkle closed the book at No. 3 singles, defeating Tanner Wilcox, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Calvin will host either Trine or Alma on May 3 in the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament. Hope will host Adrian in the other semifinal match.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin split a conference doubleheader with Kalamazoo Friday afternoon, winning the opener 5-4 and losing game two 17-8.
Calvin took game one behind the pitching tandem of junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) and sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). Keane (3-1) went six innings to pick up the victory while VanDuyn came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to claim his second save of the season.
The Knights scored all five of their runs in the second inning. Sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) collected an RBI single to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) followed with a run-scoring double. Keane then helped his own cause by launching a three-run homer to left. The home run was the fourth of the season for Keane.
Kalamazoo (11-14 overall, 9-7 MIAA) chipped into the Calvin lead with a run in the third and three runs in the fourth. Keane tossed scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth and VanDuyn finished the job with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) went 3-for-3 to lead an eight-hit Calvin attack. Senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) also launched a double in the win.
In game two, Kalamazoo erupted for 19 hits. The Hornets took control of the game with a nine-run fourth inning. Calvin had 10 hits in the loss and put up three runs in the fourth and four in the seventh.
DeZwaan went 3-for-5 in the loss to boost his season batting average to .340 including his conference batting average to .466. Padilla went 2-for-5 with a double. Keane and Hyndiuk also had doubles while junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) belted a two-run RBI triple.
Calvin committed four errors in the loss which led to 10 unearned runs scored by Kalamazoo.
The Knights are now 12-16 overall and 10-8 in the MIAA heading into a Saturday doubleheader at Kalamazoo scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Calvin women's track and field team opened competition at the Grand Valley State Al Owens Classic Friday afternoon.
The competition began with a small series of field events.
Freshman Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) won the javelin throw with a toss of 125-3. Her winning throw ranks in the top 35 in Division III this spring. Sophomore Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) was sixth (103-2) and freshman Annaka Ediger (Hudsonville, Mich./Hamilton HS) was seventh (101-4). Junior Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was also 11th with a throw of 93-6.
Ediger also had a career-best throw of 96-7 in the hammer throw.

Junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took 10th with a throw of 158-3. Sophomore Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had a throw of 130-7 while freshman Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) had a heave of 125-8.
Jorritsma took seventh in the javelin with a throw of 144-8.
