"I am very happy with the effort we put forth today," said Calvin head coach Becky Hilgert. "We came ready to play and made needed adjustments throughout both games against a quality opponent. Offensively, we kept attacking and outside of one inning, we played solid defensively."
The Knights lit up the scoreboard in the third inning. Freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) had a single through the middle of the infield that scored junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian). The Knights struck early in game two. In the second inning, Kristen Newman smashed a single to score Kayla Groen.
The Maroon and Gold broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning.
Freshman Kennedy Geiger (Clarksville, Mich./Lake Odessa) doubled into the gap in right center to score Kristen Newman and Kayla Groen.
Maddie DeGroot singled to the shortstop and then she sailed the ball past first base to score Kennedy Geiger.
The Calvin scoring ended with a single by Grace Stock through the middle of the infield to score Maddie DeGroot.
The Spartans would not surrender and scored their lone run in the fifth inning. The Calvin defense stood tall and got out of a bases-loaded jam.

Calvin 8, Adrian 1
ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team picked up an 8-1 conference victory at Adrian Tuesday afternoon to improve to 11-5 overall and more importantly to 4-1 in conference play.
Tuesday's match was played inside the Merrilat Sport and Fitness Center due to weather conditions but the Knights were able to adjust to the new surface in winning fashion.
Calvin took two of the three doubles points and then sealed the win by claiming all six singles flights.
In doubles, freshmen Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home Schooled) claimed an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
Adrian's lone point came at No. 3 doubles as Makayla Jorgensen and Julia Maltbie edged freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) 9-8.
Calvin won all six singles flights in straight sets.
Newhof downed Amber Laginess 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Brouwer was a 6-1, 6-2 victor over Samantha Cyrus at No. 2 doubles.
Asfour came up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olivia Neumann at No. 3 singles with Foote rolling to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sarah Anthony at No. 4 singles.
Bonner dropped Elena Bishop 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles while Statema topped Jorgensen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
"It was a good conference win on the road," said Calvin women's tennis coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I thought we adjusted to the change of court surface well once the decison was made to move inside. I'm proud of my team for coming ready to compete. Any win on the road is a big one. We have some big matches still ahead of us but at this point of the season it's a 'one match a a time' mentality for our team."
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Trine University at 2 p.m. at the Strikwerda Tennis Center.
