MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Albion 0
ALBION, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team defeated Albion on the road to improve to 15-3 on the year. The 9-0 victory is the 200th career victory for John Ross as the head coach of the Calvin men's tennis program. The victory pushes Calvin to 6-1 in MIAA action, Albion falls to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA.
"These achievements just show you have been coaching a long time," said head coach John Ross. "Truly, it is a great honor. I have coached many great men who are responsible for these victories. It is a nice honor, but we have to focus on a big match on Friday. I am pleased with how we played today and I hope we can ride this momentum into Friday."
The Wednesday match was the 200th career tennis victory for coach Ross. As the Calvin women's basketball coach, he recorded a 299-66 record and made four trips to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round. Ross also helped lead Calvin to its first-ever men's tennis MIAA title in school history in 2013. The Knights went 5-1 in the regular season to finish tied for first along with Kalamazoo and Hope. Calvin has finished in second place in the MIAA eight times under Coach Ross. Over the past 14 seasons, Ross has had 14 All-MIAA First Team honorees. In addition, his men's tennis teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award nine times.
Senior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) and junior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) landed the first punch on Wednesday. The duo downed Michael Bernard and Chandler Martin at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) whipped Nick Kinachtchouk and Michael Barclay at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. The Calvin team improves to 10-4 with the victory.
Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) swept Robert Joerg and Isreal Trevino at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. The Calvin duo is now 11-2 on the season.
Matt Van Winkle made quick work of Nick Kinachtchouk at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Van Winkle improves to 4-1 in MIAA play with the win.
Max Stallings brought out the broom at No. 4 singles, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Patrick Barclay.
Jose Larrea tripped up Isreal Trevino at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles, David Brown bounced Robert Joerg, 6-1, 6-2. The victory is the first victory for Brown at No. 1 singles.
Charlie Fahr shut down Chandler Martin at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Fahr improves to 8-2 in singles play with the win.
Jason Wolters Michael Bernard swept away Michael Bernard at No. 6 singles to close the match at 6-0, 6-0.
The Knights close the regular season on Friday in a key MIAA matchup with Adrian. If Calvin were to win, the Knights clinch the top seed in the MIAA Tournament. If Calvin, Hope and Adrian were all tied, head-to-head points would break the tie. With Calvin defeating Hope 5-4 and Hope sweeping Adrian, 9-0. Calvin would need to win one point on Friday to clinch the No. 2 seed.

ADRIAN, Mich. - Adrian edged Calvin 5-4 in a defensive struggle Wednesday night at Docking Stadium.
The host Bulldogs (1-10 overall, 1-3 MIAA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with first quarter goals from Fernando Rodriguez and Kyle Sanderson.
Calvin (3-11 overall, 0-4 MIAA) came back with an unassisted goal by sophomore Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and a man-up goal by senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) with freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) drawing an assist on the play. The goal by Winkler came with just 24 seconds left in the first quarter.
Adrian's Michael Turner scored unassisted with 10:14 left in the second quarter but Calvin junior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) leveled the score with an unassisted goal just over two minute later.
Rodriguez and Turner then hooked up for a go-ahead Adrian goal with 7:04 left in the quarter that allowed the Bulldogs to eventually take a 4-3 lead into halftime.
Calvin held possession for large portions of the third quarter and broke through for the tying goal with 5:56 left in the period as junior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) whipped in a goal off a pass from Winkler.
Both teams then fought for the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter with the host Bulldogs breaking the deadlock with 9:35 remaining on a shot by Turner. The Turner goal slipped just inside the near post and gave Adrian a 5-4 advantage it would not reliquish.
Calvin outshot Adrian 15-4 in the fourth quarter and had two shots inside the final minute of play sail just wide.
Calvin held a 36-18 shots at goal advantage but Adrian goaltender Peter Dugan came up with nine saves. Adrian also held the advantage in ground balls, scooping up 32 ground balls to Calvin's 22.
Calvin was 18-of-24 on clear attempts and forced Adrian into 32 turnovers.
Senior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Me./Falmouth HS) had another strong game defensively with six ground balls and causing five turnovers. Winkler also caused three turnovers to go with an goal and an assist.
Freshman goaltender Mitchell Wong (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) caused three turnovers and came up with three saves. Freshman Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./John Adams HS) also came up with three ground balls.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Alma for a 7 p.m. conference match.
