CALVIN KNIGHT WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 15, 2018

(Editor's Note: the weekend track and field recap is being resent as a collection of events were missed in the Saturday evening report)

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin women's track and field team opened competition at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational on Friday.

In the 100-meter dash, freshman Patience Buckley (Smithville Flats, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) finished in 26th place at 14.18.

Senior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) finished in third place in the 100-meter hurdles open at 15.18.

Senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) had the third-fastest time in the 1500-meter run on Friday at 4:46.51. Sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) finished third in the open at 4:55.64.

Freshman Madison Brink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) clocked in at 1:14.01 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Freshman Renee Miller (Marlette, Mich./Marlette) was the fastest Knight in the 200-meter dash at 27.36.

In a field filled with NCAA Division I runners, junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) finished sixth in the 5000-meter run at 18:32.76. At 19:00.70 was freshman Angeline Needs (Peru, Ill./Saint Bede Academy).

In the 10,000 meters, junior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) posted a time of 40:05.21).

In the long jump, Jenna Dyksen finished fifth in the open competition at 5.12 meters (16-9 1/2).

Senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, N.J./Eastern Christian) finished second in the high jump at 1.60 meters (5-3).

Freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./West) led the Knights in the pole vault open competition at 3.05 meters (10-0).

Freshman Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, N.J./Eastern Christian) had the second-best throw in the javelin at 36.31 meters (119-1). Junior Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) had a throw of 108-5 while freshman Annaka Ediger (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) had a career-best throw of 100-3.

On Saturday, Calvin College sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday evening in the 10,000 meter run. Koetje placed third in the event with a time of 38:14.69.

In the 1500 meters, junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) had a blistering time of 4:35.50 that currently ranks eighth on the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field performance list.

Diekema, Koetje and the rest of their Calvin teammates will return to action next weekend, competing at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's track and field team opened competition at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational on Friday.

Freshman Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) finished fifth in the 1500-meter run open at 4:16.98.

Senior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Calif./Escondido Calvin Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 110-meter hurdles open in sixth place at 16.50.

Junior Jacob Buday (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) clocked in at 54.14 in the 400-meter dash.

Sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) was the second-fastest runner in the 400-meter dash at Oakland at 56.39. Mark Bekhet finished at 1:01.59.

The Knights posted the second-fastest time in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran), junior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Christian), junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and junior Marcus James (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished at 3:36.77.

In the 800 meters, the Knights posted a 1-2 finish with Jeninga winning the race with a time of 1:55.59 while Peterson was second in 1:56.44.

The Knights also posted a 1-2 finish in the pole vault with senior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) winning with a height of 12-6 1/4 while sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville Christian HS) finished second by judges' decision with a vault of 12-6 1/4.

The Calvin men shined in the 5000-meter run on Friday. Freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the fastest non-Division I runner at 15:22.35. Senior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) was second in the open race at 15:40.96 and sophomore Jacob Pettinga (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) finished third at 15:44.02.

In the 10,000 meters, junior Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was second (33:37.84), freshman Chris McWain (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) third (33:44.92) and sophomore Ryan VanAppeldorn (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) fourth (34:15.47).

In the long jump, sophomore Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) finished second in the open competition at 6.44 meters (21-1 1/2).

Sophomore Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) had the fifth-best throw in the javelin at 39.68 meters (130-2).

Junior Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished eighth in the open hammer throw competition at 43.13 meters (141-6).

On Saturday, A group of Calvin distance runners from the Calvin men's track and field team competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.

In the men's 1500 meter run, senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocked a time of 4:19.64.

Sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) posted a time of 9:32.12 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) clocked in with a time of 9:43.53.

In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) came up with a career-best time of 14:51.96.

Freshman Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) also competed in his first collegiate 10,000 meter run and did so in strong fashion, taking second with a time of 31:21.67.

Calvin will return to action next weekend, competing at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University.
