BASEBALL

ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader Friday night at Adrian, falling by scores of 5-1 and 8-0.
In game one, Adrian (20-5 overall, 14-2 MIAA) broke loose for a four-run inning in the bottom of the first, using four hits including a bases-loaded triple by Brady Wood to build a 4-0 lead. Adrian added a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Knights (11-15 overall, 9-7 MIAA) kept clawing away against Adrian senior All-American righthander Tommy Parsons. Calvin finished the game with six hits and broke through for a run in the top of the seventh as junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a passed ball.
With two runners aboard, Parsons was able to stymie the Calvin scoring threat with a game-ending strikeout.
Parsons struck out 10 batters without a walk but Calvin sophomore righthander Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) had a strong outing of his own, striking out eight batters in six innings of work while allowing only three hits over his final five innings of work.
Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) was 2-for-3 while senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had a double.
In game two, Adrian used small ball to its advantage as the Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning, using two bunt singles, two sacrifice bunts, an error and a run-scoring double.
Adrian added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to build its final eight-run cushion.
Calvin turned three double-plays on defense in the loss and rapped out seven hits.
Keane, freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) and senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) all had two hits apiece.
Keane and Stewart both had doubles for the Knights.
Freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the start and went 4.1 innings, striking out four and walking three. Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS). sophomore Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centerville HS) and sophomore Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) all saw time in relief.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it opens a four-game MIAA weekend series with Kalamazoo with the Knights set to host the Hornets on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
WOMEN'S GOLF
WEST CHICAGO, Ill. - The Calvin women's golf team competed at the MIAA-CCIW Challenge on Friday. The Saturday round was called off due to weather.
The CCIW won the event with a score of 701 to 728. Joining Calvin on the MIAA side was Hope College. The two went up against Wheaton and North Central.
Freshman McKenna Smith (Bridgeman, Mich./Bridgeman) led the Knights with a colligate-low round of 92.
Freshman Linnea McDonough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater) finished with 93 strokes.
Senior Gen Best (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) recorded a round of 96.
Freshman Amanda Scholten (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian) finished at 103 strokes and senior Elizabeth Scholten (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian) shot a round of 105.
Junior Katy Hamilton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) walked into the club house at 107 strokes.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 13, Kalamazoo 6
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team remained perfect in MIAA in less than perfect conditions on Saturday. The Knights defeated Kalamazoo on a cold, rainy and windy afternoon, 13-6. The Knights improve to 5-0 in the MIAA and 7-5 overall. Kalamazoo falls to 4-7 and to 1-3 in MIAA action.
"The team played well today," said Blake Boehm. "They battled through the elements with energy and intensity. I think we transitioned well we fought hard for our possessions. Overall, this was a good team win."
Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) started the scoring on a free position shot.
After a Kalamazoo goal, the Knights responded with seven-straight goals.
Junior Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) started the streak with a pass from junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills).
35 seconds later, Amanda Davio found the back of the net again for her second goal of the day.
Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) got her paws on the scoresheet with a shot that fooled the K'zoo keeper.
Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) scored on a free position shot to put Calvin up, 5-1.
Kelly Pepper tallied her third assist of the game with a pass to junior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington).
24 seconds later, Amanda Davio earned the hat trick on a free position shot.
The final Calvin goal of the half came from Genevieve Schneemann from Emma Hall.
The Hornets scored a goal late in the half to send the teams to halftime at 8-2.
Emma Verrett started the second half with two-straight goals.
Genevieve Schneemann scored her third goal of the day to push the lead to 11-2.
The Hornets cut into the Calvin lead with a 4-1, the lone Calvin goal coming from Kelly Pepper.
After two Kalamazoo goals, Amanda Davio ended the scoring on Saturday.
Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) recorded four saves in the win.
The Knights were successful on all 17 clear attempts on Saturday.
Amanda Davio finished with a game-high four goals.
Junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the game with three caused turnovers.
Emma Verrett had a game-high four ground balls.
Calvin renews the rivalry on Tuesday evening. The game marks the final home game of the regular season.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Hope 13, Calvin 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin fell to rival Hope 13-0 on a frigid Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Hope outshot Calvin 52-9 and forced the Knights into 32 turnovers.
Calvin was 19 for 32 on clear attempts but Hope won 13 of 17 face-off opportunities.
Hope led 3-0 after one quarter and 7-0 at halftime before adding three goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Calvin freshman goaltender Mitchell Wong (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) came up with a career-high 25 saves for the Knights while also collecting a career-high 15 ground balls.
Senior Derek VanderBrug (Woburn, Mass./Lexington Christian Academy) had three ground balls and caused two Hope turnovers. Junior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) and sophomore Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) had three ground balls apiece. Sophomore Nick Pitre (Jacksonville, Fl./Providence HS) also caused two Hope turnovers.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 7 p.m. game.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Calvin women's track and field team opened competition at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational on Friday.
In the 100-meter dash, freshman Patience Buckley (Smithville Flats, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) finished in 26th place at 14.18.
Senior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) finished in third place in the 100-meter hurdles open at 15.18.
Senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) had the third-fastest time in the 1500-meter run on Friday at 4:46.51. Sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) finished third in the open at 4:55.64.
Freshman Madison Brink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) clocked in at 1:14.01 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Freshman Renee Miller (Marlette, Mich./Marlette) was the fastest Knight in the 200-meter dash at 27.36.
In a field filled with NCAA Division I runners, junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) finished sixth in the 5000-meter run at 18:32.76. At 19:00.70 was freshman Angeline Needs (Peru, Ill./Saint Bede Academy).
In the long jump, Jenna Dyksen finished fifth in the open competition at 5.12 meters.
Senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, N.J./Eastern Christian) finished second in the high jump at 1.60 meters.
Freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./West) led the Knights in the pole vault open competition at 3.05 meters.
Freshman Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, N.J./Eastern Christian) had the second-best throw in the javelin at 36.31 meters.
The Knights are scheduled to finish the competition on Saturday at Oakland.
MORE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Calvin College sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday evening in the 10,000 meter run. Koetje placed third in the event with a time of 38:14.69.
Koetje and the rest of her Calvin teammates will return to action next weekend, competing at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Calvin men's track and field team opened competition at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational on Friday.
Freshman Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) finished fifth in the 1500-meter run open at 4:16.98.
Senior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Calif./Escondido Calvin Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 110-meter hurdles open in sixth place at 16.50.
Junior Jacob Buday (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) clocked in at 54.14 in the 400-meter dash.
Sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) was the second-fastest runner in the 400-meter dash at Oakland at 56.39. Mark Bekhet finished at 1:01.59.
The Knights posted the second-fastest time in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran), junior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Christian), junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and junior Marcus James (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished at 3:36.77.
The Calvin men shined in the 5000-meter run on Friday. Freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the fastest non-Division I runner at 15:22.35. Senior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) was second in the open race at 15:40.96 and sophomore Jacob Pettinga (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) finished third at 15:44.02.
In the long jump, sophomore Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) finished second in the open competition at 6.44 meters.
Sophomore Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) had the fifth-best throw in the javelin at 39.68 meters.
Junior Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished eighth in the open hammer throw competition at 43.13 meters.
The Knights are scheduled to finish the competition on Saturday at Oakland.
MORE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
LEWISBURG, Pa. - A group of Calvin distance runners from the Calvin men's track and field team competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.
In the men's 1500 meter run, senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocked a time of 4:19.64.
Sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) posted a time of 9:32.12 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
Freshman Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) also competed in his first collegiate 10,000 meter run and did so in strong fashion, taking second with a time of 31:21.67.
MEN'S TENNIS
Kalamazoo 9, Calvin 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team fell to the No. 30-ranked Hornets of Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon, 9-0. The loss snaps a six-match winning streak for the Knights. The loss moves Calvin to 14-3 and 4-1 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo improves to 10-6 and 5-0 in MIAA play.
"We knew that Kalamazoo was going to be tough," said head coach John Ross. "They made us work on all of the courts today and were the better team. We have to refocus and prepare for two very important matches."
The Knights put up a battle at No. 1 doubles, the team of senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) fell to Daniel Henry and Tytus Metzler, 8-6.
With the Albion loss today, the Knights have secured a spot in the MIAA Tournament.
The Knights look to bounce back on Wednesday at Albion.
