GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team picked up a key victory in the MIAA race on Thursday afternoon. The Knights took the first game of the series of the MIAA-leading Bulldogs of Adrian, 4-0. The Bulldogs bounced back with a 6-4 victory in game two. The Knights move to 11-13 on the year and 9-5 in MIAA play. The Bulldogs are now 18-5 in 2018 and 12-2 in MIAA play.
Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Calif./J Serra Catholic) started the scoring on Thursday in the second inning with a blast over the fence in left-center field with his first home run of the year.
The Knights added three more runs in the third inning. A throwing error allowed senior James Boice (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kelloggsville) and senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian) to safely cross home plate. Senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) singled to center field to score sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East)
The Calvin defense stood firm the rest of the game and did not allow a Bulldog run.
Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) had a strong outing on the mound and only allowed two hits in game one. Keane finished with eight strikeouts.
Nate DeZwaan had two of the four Calvin hits in game one.
The Knights scored two runs in the first inning of game two. Ryan Pena doubled into the gap in right-center to score Jonathan Keane and freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Calif./Poway).
The Bulldogs bit the Knights with one run in the second inning and three runs in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, Jonathan Keane grounded out to second base and scored Quinn Hyndiuk.
The Knights tied the game in the eighth inning when Ricky Padilla scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead back with two runs in the ninth.
Calvin threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but could not convert.
Ricky Padilla led Calvin in game three with three hits.
Junior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) finished with four strikeouts.
The Knights look to bounce back on Friday at Adrian.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 28, Olivet 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up a decisive 28-0 victory against Olivet College on Wednesday night at Zuidema Field. The Knights outshot the Comets 44-0, while holding Olivet to 0-16 on clear attempts in the win.
Wednesday was the first time in program history where the Knights have not allowed a shot on goal. The 28 goals, 18 assists and 46 points are all a program records.
The Knights improve to 6-5 on the year and remain undefeated in MIAA play with a 4-0 conference mark. The Knights have won their last 17 MIAA games, holding a streak that has now spanned three seasons, with the last loss coming in 2016. Olivet drops to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Calvin leads the all-time series against the Comets, 6-0. The Knights have outscored Olivet 122-31 over the past five seasons.
Fifteen Knights scored in the winning effort. Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the Knights with four goals. Juniors Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) both notched hat tricks. Junior Alyssa Gagnon (Minooka, Ill./Minooka), junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School), sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian), senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and junior Sky Gyuro (Warwick, N.Y./Storm King School) all scored two goals apiece.
Sophomore Sarah Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School), freshman Julia Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian), senior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day School), Gagnon, Gyuro and Oezer all earned their first goal of the season in Wednesday night's game.
Junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) also recorded a goal for the Knights, while collecting a team-high 10 assists. Her 11 point and 10 assists are single-game program records. Pepper's 34 assists on the year are a single-season school record.
Madeline Baas led all players with nine draw controls and four caused turnovers.
Calvin is coming off a key 14-10 victory over MIAA-rival Albion. Kelly Pepper led the Knights with 10 points on three goals and seven assists. Pepper was named the MIAA Offensive Player of Week on Monday. She now leads the MIAA with 34 assists.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday at Kalamazoo. Game time is set for 11 a.m. The Knights' next home game is April 17 against Hope for senior day.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team shined under the sun on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights reached the 10-win plateau with a 9-0 victory over the Britons of Albion College. The victory moves Calvin to 10-5 and 3-1 in the MIAA. Albion falls to 3-11 on the year and 1-3 in MIAA play.
"It was nice to be able to play outside," said Calvin head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I was happy with our play today. It took some time to adjust to playing outside, but we were able to come away with a good win."
Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) swept Kirstin Moore and Abby Burris at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
Senior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home school) and sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) downed Marceline Redick and Bella Scalise at No. 2 doubles, 8-1.
The freshman team of Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) and Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) trailed early but were able to rally at No. 1 doubles and defeat Olivia Conover and Madelyn Polich, 8-3.
Brittney Statema opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kirstin Moore at No. 6 singles.
Madeline Brouwer bounced Marceline Redick at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Lark Foote defeated Madelyn Polich at no. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Anna Asfour sank Christiana Rafaill, 6-1, 6-1.
Alexis Bonner beat Bella Scalise at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Leah Newhof finished off the Brits at No. 1 singles, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olivia Conover.
The Knights return to play on Tuesday at Adrian.
