GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 20 ranked Calvin softball team split with the Alma Scots on Tuesday. The split helps keep the Knights alive in a tight MIAA race. The Scots took game one, 7-3, with the Knights responding with a 10-2 victory in game two. Calvin improves to 16-5 overall and to 3-3 in the MIAA. Alma moves to 18-7 and 4-2 in MIAA action.
"I was very happy how we bounced back in game two," said Calvin head coach Becky Hilgert. "Defensively we played error-free which is so important against good teams. Offensively our players up and down the batting order attacked, had a good approach and did not settle after scoring a few early runs. After a few sluggish games offensively, it was nice to see the bats come alive."
After three scoreless innings, the Scots struck first in game one. Alma scored two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) singled to center field to score junior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg).
Sophomore Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) crossed home plate on a throwing error in the sixth inning.
The Scots pushed the lead up to 7-2 in the seventh inning.
A single to left field from freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) scored Maddie DeGroot for the final run of the game.
Junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) recorded five strikeouts in game one.
Maddie DeGroot had a game-high three hits.
The Knights jumped on the Scots in the third inning. Senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) started the scoring spree with a single to right field that scored junior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea). Grace Stock then scored Brasser on a double to right field. Junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) was able to get Stock across home plate with a shot to left field.
Sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) put a dent in the comeback hopes of Alma with a double down the left-field line in the fourth inning that scored Anna Gernant.
The Scots cut the Calvin lead in half in the fifth inning.
The floodgates opened for Calvin in the sixth inning.
The Alma defense coughed up two errors on a play that scored Kayla Groen and senior Kimiko Hinatsu (Romeo, Mich./Romeo).
Jessica Brasser sent a blast through the middle of the infield to score Rachel Borden and Kristen Newman.
Grace Stock got on her horse and hustled her way to third base on a shot down the right-field line to score Jessica Brasser.
Abby Colon was able to score Grace Stock on in infield shot.
Freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) kept the Scots quiet on Tuesday. She only allowed five hits to the potent Alma lineup. Borst also recorded two strikeouts.
After a recent schedule change, the Knights next game is scheduled for Saturday in the rivalry at Hope.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Olivet 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team remained in the driver's seat in the MIAA with a 9-0 victory over Olivet on Tuesday afternoon. The sun shined on the Knights as they improved to 14-2 on the year and 4-0 in the MIAA. With Kalamazoo ineligible for the MIAA Tournament, the Knights remain a match ahead of Adrian at 3-1. The 9-0 victory is the eighth sweep of the season for Calvin.
"It was nice to be able to play outside today," said head coach John Ross. "We were able to get another MIAA victory today and that is always nice. We now have a very tough match ahead with Kalamazoo."
Sophomore Kyrus Tsai (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and freshman Avery Holt (Aurora, Ill./Matea Valley) struck first for the Knights at No. 3 doubles, the duo downed Ben Morris and Tyler Noble, 8-2.
The senior team Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) bounced Zach Croze and Drew Gilmer at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.
Junior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) and sophomore Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./ San Dimas) finished off Noah Bindschatel and Donald Doyle at No. 2 doubles, 8-6.
The bottom half of the Calvin singles lineup was very consistent on Tuesday. Charlie Fahr, Avery Holt and Cobe Benzel won, 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) defeated Drew Gilmer at No. 2 single, 6-0, 6-1.
Max Stallings sank Noah Bindschatel at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán topped Zachary Croze at No. 1 single, 6-2, 6-1 to finish the sweep.
The Knights return to the courts on Saturday in a battle of first place in the MIAA against Kalamazoo.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Kalamazoo 13, Calvin 7
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin dropped a 13-7 conference match to visiting Kalamazoo Tuesday evening at Zuidema Field.
Tuesday's contest marked the first-ever Calvin men's lacrosse game under the lights.
Calvin (3-9 overall, 0-2 MIAA) met Kalamazoo (1-6 overall, 1-1 MIAA) on even terms for one half of play as the teams were tied 4-4 at halftime.
The Knights trailed 4-2 but used a man-up goal from junior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) and another tally from senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) to tie the score.
Winkler's goal was his second of the first half and came with 3:37 left in the second quarter. Winkler added two more goals in the second half but Kalamazoo outscored Calvin 4-2 in the third quarter and 5-1 in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Winkler finished the game with four goals and an assist. Also scoring goals for Calvin were freshman Joe Son (Aldie, Va./John Champe) and freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS).
Both teams won 12 out of 24 face-off opportunities but the Hornets won eight out of 14 in the second half while controlling possession of the ball as the game wore on.
Kalamazoo finished with a 31-25 shots at goal advantage including 20-9 in the second half.
Senior defender Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Me./Falmouth HS) had a strong game for the Knights with five ground balls while causing four Kalamazoo turnovers.
Freshman Mitchell Wong (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) had nine saves for Calvin in goal.
The Knights return to action on Saturday night, hosting rival Hope at Zuidema Field at 7 p.m.
