GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's baseball team split a doubleheader with MIAA opponent Albion on Monday.
Sophomore Sam Schellenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) was the hero in game one for the Knights, delivering a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Knights a 4-3 victory. Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East) came in to pitch in the top of the ninth inning to earn the win on the hill. In game two, the Britons built an early three-run lead and held the Knights to five hits to roll to a 6-1 win.
Monday's twinbill concluded a doubleheader that began last Thursday at Albion. Calvin took both ends of the doubleheader, winning 3-2 and 5-2.
The Knights took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning as junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Calif./J Serra Catholic) doubled to right center before sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) delivered an RBI single.
The Britons answered with a pair of runs in the third inning, but their lead was short-lived as Calvin responded with two runs of its own. Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) got the Knights' bats going, leading off the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun to left field. Sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) came up with a two-out double to left center before freshman Mitch Mustert (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) singled up the middle to bring Marshall home.
Albion knotted the score again in the fourth inning, and the two teams remained tied at three until the bottom of the tenth inning.
Junior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) came in to pitch in the top of the seventh inning with one out, walking a batter before the Knights turned a double play to get out of the inning. In the top of the ninth inning, sophomore Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) saw time on the mound before being relieved by Logan Walker. Walker pitched out of a bases-loaded jam, delivering a strikeout before Ryan Stewart came up with a stellar catch in deep right center field.
Walker went three up, three down in the top of the tenth inning, picking up another big one-out strikeout before Stewart robbed the Britons of another hit in deep center field.
Senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) led off the bottom of the tenth with a single to center field. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Calif./Poway) advanced DeZwaan, and senior James Boice (Grand Rapids, Mich.Kelloggsville) came in to pinch run at second. Albion intentionally walked Keane to bring up pinch hitter Sam Schellenberg. Schellenberg singled through the left side to score Boice and lift the Knights to a one-run victory.
Sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) started game one for the Knights, going 6.1 innings, racking up 97 pitches against 31 batters and earning five strikeouts.
Game two was initially set to last nine innings, but was changed to a seven-inning game due to the extra innings of game one.
The Britons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two, notching six hits in the first three innings. Calvin got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Mitch Mustert reached first on an error, stole second and was scored after a single to right center by Nate DeZwaan.
Albion widened its lead to four runs, tacking on a pair of runs in the fifth inning on three hits and one error. A two-out, two RBI single by Kellan Huang gave the Britons a 5-1 advantage. The Britons built their lead to six in the top of the seventh inning, capitalizing on a hit and a Calvin wild pitch.
Calvin struggled to get its bats going, as Albion pitcher Andrew Fabry earned the win on the mound, holding the Knights to five hits through seven innings while racking up eight strikeouts.
Three players saw time on the hill for the Knights. Freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) went 4.2 innings and took the loss, while sophomore Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville) and Walker saw time in relief.
The Knights are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Adrian for a 2 p.m. doubleheader before hosting the Bulldogs in a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

MORE BASEBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Ricky Padilla was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Position Player of the Week on Monday for games through April 8. Padilla helped the Knights win both of their games against Albion.
"I am really happy for Ricky," said Calvin head coach John Rypel. "He has worked really hard this year and I am happy to see his hard work get acknowledged. He had a great week in the field and at the plate."
A freshman from Poway, California, Padilla is claiming the honor for the first time in his career.
In game one, Padilla had three hits at three at-bats. He finished the game with a walk and an RBI. He was the winning run that crossed home plate in the eighth inning of a 3-2 victory.
He followed that up with three hits in game two and an RBI.
SOFTBALL

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin softball team fell in its MIAA road opener on Monday afternoon. After 10 days without a game, the Knights fell 0-3 and 3-8 on Monday. The Knights move to 15-4 on the year and 2-2 in the MIAA.
Saint Mary's struck first in the third inning with a run.
The Belles added two more in the fifth inning.
The Knights threatened in the sixth inning with runners on the corners, but were unable to capitalize.
Junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) six strikeouts in game one.
The Belles jumped out to an early lead in game two scoring a run in the first and second innings and adding two more in the third.
Junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) sent the ball over the right-field fence in the sixth inning to put Calvin on the scoreboard.
The Belles added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Calvin cut into the lead with junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) scoring on a passed ball.
Freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) knocked a double down the left-field line to score senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) standing up.
Abby Colon pitched over four innings in relief in game two and recorded a strikeout.
Jessica Brasser led the Knights with three hits in game two.
The Knights look to bounce back on Tuesday against Alma.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Bethel (Ind.) 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team kept the winning ways rolling on Monday. The Knights won their fifth-straight match with a 9-0 victory over Bethel of Indiana. The victory propels Calvin to 13-2 on the year and sends Bethel to 6-11.
"Today was a good way to start a busy week," said head coach John Ross. "I am happy with how the guys played today. We will have to rest up tonight and prepare for Olivet tomorrow."
Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) and senior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) swept away Evan Ferguson and Sidney Petersen at No. 2 doubles, 8-0.
At No. 3 doubles, junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) sank Brian Shembarger and Jeryl Weaver, 8-2.
Senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) secured the doubles sweep at No. 1 doubles. Besting Jacob Macri and Jose Morales, 8-5.
Matt Van Winkle struck first for the Knights in singles play. Defeating Jose Morales at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
David Brown bounced Sidney Petersen at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán shot down Jacob Macri at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-2.
Jose Larrea won a three-set thriller over Evan Furguson, 6-0, 6-7, 10-6.
Max Stallings sat down Brian Shembarger at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
Junior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) finished the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jeryl Weaver.
The Knights have won seven 9-0 matches this year.
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday against Olivet.
MORE MEN'S TENNIS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Jason Wolters of the Calvin men's tennis team was named the division3tennis.com Central Region Player of the Week for his performance, last week.
A junior from Hudsonville, Michigan, Wolters helped Calvin defeat Hope and Trine.
With senior Matt Van Winkle, Wolters went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles last week, defeating Hope 8-6.
Against Hope, with the match tied at four, Wolters took the first set from Justin Folkert, 6-4. Folkert responded with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Down a break, Wolters rallied to win the third set, 6-4. To clinch the rivalry match for Calvin.
He finished the week with an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles against Trine, with Van Winkle.
Wolters and the Knights return to play on Tuesday against Olivet.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Leah Newhof claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's tennis Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through April 8. Newhof helped the Knights go 2-0 last week with victories over Alma and Olivet.
"It's a great honor for Leah to be named MIAA Athlete of the Week," said Calvin head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Leah had a great week helping lead us to a 2-0 week in the MIAA. She has had a great attitude and work ethic all year, and you can see it in her play. We have more big matches coming up, and we will have to continue to work hard."
A freshman from Caledonia, Michigan, Newhof is claiming the honor for the second time this season. The first time being in September for her performance at the Hope Invitational.
With freshman Madeline Brouwer, Newhof defeated Alma's Butterfield and McCarthy at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.
On Monday, she topped Brooke Butterfield of Alma at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Against Olivet, she and freshman Sydney Ellsworth defeated Keely Cruz and Rachael Hager at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.
Newhof closed the week with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rachael Hager at No. 1 singles.
The Calvin freshman is 10-4 at No. 1 singles in 2018.
Newhof and the Knights return to action on Wednesday against Albion.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Kelly Pepper was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for games through April 8. Pepper helped the Knights win two MIAA games over Alma and Albion.
"Kelly had a great week," said Calvin head coach Blake Boehm. "She's really stepped up this year and has taken the initiative to lead our offense. The fact that she's leading the conference in assists and is currently second in points is a testament to her unselfish play."
A junior from Wyckoff, New Jersey, Pepper is claiming the honor for the first time this season and third time in her career.
Last week, Pepper tallied 15 points on seven goals and eight assists.
Tuesday night at Alma, she had four goals on 10 shots. She also recorded one assist, caused one turnover and had three ground balls.
The Britons could not figure out Pepper on Saturday, Pepper finished the game with seven assists, five coming in a row and three goals. She also caused one turnover and had one ground ball.
Her seven assists were one short of her career record of eight.
Pepper and the Knights return to play on Wednesday against Olivet.
