CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 24, 2018 (Part Two)
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team scored in three events on Friday at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. The Knights are in 20th place after three days with 32 points.
"I am proud of this team for continuing to step into the ring each day," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We are accumulating more scoring swims than last year and we are close to having everyone score. I know we will get up tomorrow morning and sprint to the finish."
Junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) earned All-American honors in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday. He finished the finals with a time of 48.66 in fifth place.
Junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) finished in 21st place in the 100-yard backstroke at 50.04.
Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) scored at the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career on Friday. Moentmann finished 15th in the 1-meter event with 422.75 points.
"I can not say enough about Michael," said head diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "He's been a joy to work with for four years. Today, his performances were rock solid in a very tight competition and we are very proud of him."
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman), Ben Holstege, senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) and senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) finished 17th at 6:49.53.
The Knights finish the season on Saturday for the final day of the championships.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team swam one race at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday evening. The Knights are currently in 11th place with 54.5 points.
"I am proud of this team for continuing to step into the ring each day," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We are accumulating more scoring swims than last year and we are close to having everyone score. I know we will get up tomorrow morning and sprint to the finish."
The Knights claimed All-America honors in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Friday. The team of senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy), junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) and junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) finished in eighth place at 7:30.23.
The Knights close the season on Saturday for the final day of the championships.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Luther 2

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Calvin women's tennis team closed out spring break with a victory over Luther. The Norsewomen have nipped the Knights 5-4 the past two years, but this year the Knights came out on top 7-2. Calvin improves to 6-4 on the year and finishes the spring break schedule at 2-2.
"I am incredibly proud of the team," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Luther has beat us 5-4 the past few years, so it is nice to get the win this year. The ladies did a great job of sticking to the plan tonight and we are leaving Florida on a high note."
Luther struck first on Friday, winning at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
Sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home School) leveled the match at one with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles over Kelsey Kruse and Devon Bourget.
Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) gave the Knights the lead at No. 3 doubles. The duo edged Britta Pressler and Ellie Hemker, 9-8.
Alexis Bonner made quick work of Kelsey Kruse at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) topped Jackie Cychosz at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0.
After a 7-6 battle in the first set, Anna Asfour cruised in the second set, 6-0, to defeat Devon Bourget at No. 3 singles.
Luther won its second point of the night at No. 4 singles.
Freshman Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) nipped Anna Pearson at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6.
Brittney Statema closed the door on the Norsewomen at No. 6 singles, defeating Ellie Hemker, 6-3, 6-4.
The Knights return to action on Thursday at Spring Arbor.
MEN'S TENNIS
Luther 7, Calvin 2
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Calvin men's tennis team fell short in the spring break finale on Friday night at the USTA Courts. Luther snapped Calvin's seven-match winning streak and send Calvin to 8-2 on the year.
"Luther is a very good team," said head coach John Ross. "They proved that tonight. We will have to learn from this to get better. Overall, I am happy with how this week went. We learned a lot of things and we will use those things to help us in the MIAA season."
The Knights lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles. The team of junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) won, 8-6.
Max Stallings earned the second point of the evening for Calvin at No. 6 singles, defeating Brook Norwood, 7-5, 6-2.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday at Spring Arbor.
