MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GULF SHORES, AL - The Calvin men's track and field team opened its 2018 outdoor campaign, competing at the Island Meet held at Gulf Shores Sports Complex. The meet also included teams from Dillard College, Murray State, Principia and Dalton.
The Knights rolled in several events.
In the distance races, Calvin had a big afternoon.
Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 1,500 meters (4:07.89). Senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) won the 5,000 meters (15:44.26) and senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) won the 800 meters (1:55.94) with junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) a close second (1:56.18). Calvin sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) also cruised to a win in the steeplechase with a time of 9:33.29.
Junior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was a winner in the 110 high hurdles (15.97). Sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) won the 400 meters with a time of 58.04.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team also took first place with a time of 3:24.95.
The Knights were also strong in the field events.
Junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a winner in both the discus (155-9) and hammer throw (159-1). His throw in the discus was just over a foot shy of his career-best. Sophomore Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) won the javelin (164-0) while sophomore Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) was second in the shot put (46-9).
Senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) won the pole vault (14-5 1/2) while sophomore Andrew Huston (Elgin, Il./Harvest Christian Academy) won the high jump (5-1 1/4).
Calvin will return home to Grand Rapids later this weekend and will compete against Hope in a non-conference dual meet next Thursday at Zuidema Field.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Highlighting the competition was the performance of sophomore Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) in the javelin as she won the competition with a career-best throw of 136-8. The throw is at the top of the Division III performance list for outdoor track and field this spring. Freshman Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was second with a collegiate career-best throw of 127-8.
Senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS) had a big afternoon, winning the 800 meters in 2:24.56 while placing third in the 1,500 meters (4:55.97).
Sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 5,000 meters (18:45.37) while freshman Madison Brink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) won the 400 meter hurdles (1:13.83).
Junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) won the steeplechase with a time of 12:05.44).
The Van Lenten sisters also piled up points in several other events.
Junior Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was second in the 100 hurdles (15.35). Senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was second in the high jump (4-11). Brooke Van Lenten was second in the pole vault (10-6).
Calvin will return home to Grand Rapids later this weekend and will compete against Hope in a non-conference dual meet next Thursday at Zuidema Field.
SOFTBALL
UW-Eau Claire 5, Calvin 4
Calvin 8, Juniata 1
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Calvin softball team closed the book on the spring break portion of the schedule on Friday with a 5-4 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire and an 8-1 victory over Juniata. The Knights move to 11-2 on the season. The Maroon and Gold finished the PFX Spring Games with a 7-2 record and led Benedictine before the game was called due to weather.
"I am happy with the way that we came back with energy in game two," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "After a sluggish performance against Eau Claire. We have a lot of great things to build on from the week and areas to keep improving, but overall I like where we are at as a team, as we get ready for conference play."
The Knights were the first team on the scoreboard on Friday. Freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) singled up the middle of the infield to score junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).
The Blugolds got one run back in the bottom of the first inning.
The Knights were able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning with a strikeout from freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian).
Maddie DeGroot joined in on the scoring with a home run to straightaway center field.
UWEC took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, Grace Stock singled in Maddie DeGroot, but that would not be enough.
Maddie DeGroot and Grace Stock led the Knights with three hits each. Sophomore Jordan VanEerden (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) tallied her first hit of the season in the seventh inning.
In the circle, the Knights recorded eight strikeouts against Wis.-Eau Claire, with junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) notching five.
For the second-straight game, the Knights struck first in the first inning. Jessica Brasser singled through the middle of the infield that scored Maddie DeGroot.
Junior Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) blasted the ball just to the right of the foul post to circle the bases and inflate the Calvin lead.
Juniata scored a run in the fourth inning, but the Knights responded with a six-run inning.
Kristen Newman scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Bri Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian).
After a double, Maddie DeGroot scored on a single from Jessica Brasser.
A double from junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) scored Brasser.
Anna Gernant scored Abby Colon and Grace Stock on an infield single.
Gernant later scored on a single from sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East).
Freshman Bri Leegwater (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian) collected her first collegiate victory in the circle on Friday, finishing with four strikeouts.
Anna Gernant led the Knights with three hits.
The Knights return to play on Tuesday at Bluffton.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 15, Western New England 6
ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team ended spring break on a high note on Friday. The Knights went Golden Bear hunting and downed Western New England, 15-6. The Maroon and Gold improve to 2-4 on the year, with the victory.
"It has been a tough week for the team," said head coach Blake Boehm. "They put in a good week of practice and worked through some challenges against some east-coast programs. Today was the culmination of their efforts. They were focused and executed the game plan well. We still have some kinks to work out, but we are happy with where we are at this point in the season."
The Knights opened the game on an 8-0 run, featuring a balanced attack in the scoring.
Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) had three of the first four goals. Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) scored the other goal on a free position shot.
Junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) both scored two goals each in the run.
After a WNE goal, the Knights responded with four of their own. Emma Verrett notched her second goal of the morning off a pass from sophomore Sarah Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe / Chisipite Senior School). Lauryn Slachter scored on a free position shot and Kelly Pepper scored the final two Calvin goals of the half.
The Knights started the second half with goals from Emma Verrett and Amanda Davio.
The Golden Bears went on a 4-0 run, but junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored the final goal of the game with 1:05 remaining.
Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo. / Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) recorded four saves in the win.
The Knights outshot Western New England, 22-12. Amanda Davio and Lauryn Slachter both finished with five shots on goal.
Senior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led Calvin with six draw controls.
Calvin finishes the non-conference portion of the schedule on Wednesday against Lawrence Tech.
