CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 9, 2018
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
BIRMINGHAM, Al. - Calvin junior Katie Diekema's bid for a berth in the finals of the mile run at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships came up two-tenths of a second short Friday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) took 11th in the Friday prelims with a time of 4:58.69. Diekema's time was two-tenths of a second behind the 10th and final qualifier out of Friday's prelims.
Running in the second heat of the prelims, Diekema was part of a bottleneck of runners jostling for position through the first half of the race. Diekema moved to the outside with three laps to go and moved into second place in her heat.
She continued to hold strong position until the final 75 meters when she was caught by a handful of runners that placed her fifth in the heat and 11th overall.
"We are extremely proud of the way Katie ran today," said Calvin distance coach Brian Diemer. "This was her first trip to indoor nationals and her first race on a banked track. Her heat got off to a slow start and she got caught up a bottleneck because of it. That forced her to moved to the second and third lanes to pass. She made a brilliant move with about 700 meters left. Running on the outside lane might have caught up to her just a bit at the end though. At the national level it comes down to inches and tenths of a second. She is not happy with the outcome but that will only drive her to get better. She's had a great indoor season and her best races are still ahead of her."
Diekema will now join the rest of her Calvin teammates to prepare for the outdoor season as the Knights will travel back to Alabama in a week for spring break. While there, Calvin will compete in an invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
