CALVIN KNIGHT WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 10, 2018

MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Illinois Institute of Technology 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team won its fifth-straight match on Saturday afternoon. The Knights welcomed Illinois Tech to the Huizenga Indoor Tennis Courts and finished with an 8-1 victory. The victory propels Calvin to 6-1 and sends the Scarlet Hawks to 8-5 on the season.
"I am really proud of how our guys battled tonight," said head coach John Ross. "We knew that we were going to face a really tough and loose Illinois Tech team and we did. It all started with some great doubles and that carried over into singles. We will now focus on preparing for some really tough matches in Florida."
The first point of the day came at No. 3 doubles. The team of junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) and freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) cruised over Jack Pio and Connor Mullane, 8-1.
At No. 2 doubles, senior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) and sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) clipped Yousef Abdo and Adam Laitinen, 8-4.
The Knights showed some grit at No. 1 doubles on Saturday. Trailing 6-7, the duo of senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St.Joseph) and junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) were able to break Franklin Zhong and Broderic Croonquist and take the match, 9-7.
Max Stallings started singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jack Pio at No. 6 singles.

At No. 4 singles, Jose Larrea made quick work of Abhishek Rana, 6-1, 6-1.
David Brown brushed off Adam Laitinen at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán captured a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Franklin Zhong.
Jason Wolters recorded the final Calvin point of the night at No. 5 singles, slashing Broderic Croonquist, 6-0, 6-2.
The Scarlet Hawks took the final point of the evening at No. 2 singles.
The Knights return to action on March 19, in Orlando, Florida, when they play Elmhurst.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 19, Otterbein 5

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Calvin women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the year in commanding fashion on Saturday afternoon. The Knights finished the weekend trip to Ohio with a 19-5 victory. The Maroon and Gold improve to 1-2 on the year and send the Cardinals to 2-5.
"We played well today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "The team felt relaxed and was really seeing the field well. We came into the game with a positive outlook on our priorities and maintained a focused mindset throughout the game."
Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) opened the scoring on Saturday with her first goal of the season. Junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) was credited with the assist, the first of many on a career-best day.
Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was the next Knight to tack onto the scoreboard at the 25:25 mark of the first half. Pepper once again threw in the assist.
20 seconds later, Kelly Pepper snuck the ball past the keeper, with junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) having the assist.
On a free position shot, senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) found the back of the net.
Emma Tilma scored her second goal of the afternoon to put the Knights up five goals.
At the 20:10 mark, Davio notched her second goal of the day.
Emma Verrett joined the goal party with 18:59 remaining in the first half.
After already having four assists and a goal, Kelly Pepper gave the Knights an 8-0 lead on a free position shot.
A shot from junior Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) made it a 9-0 game. Junior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) was credited with the assist.
A goal from Lauryn Slachter on a free position shot gave Calvin a 10-0 lead.
With 13:07 left in the first half, the Cardinals put themselves on the scoreboard.
The Knights responded with goals from Emma Tilma and Amanda Davio, to lead, 12-2, at halftime.
The Maroon and Gold opened the second half on a 6-0 run.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Lauryn Slachter, Amanda Davio and Emma Tilma all recorded goals for Calvin.
Being down a player did not slow down the Knights. Sophomore Allyson Mesman (Jenison, Mich./Hudsonville) and Lauryn Slachter both scored short-handed goals to push the lead to 17-2. Kelly Pepper had an assist on both of those goals.
The final Calvin goal of the run came from Genevieve Schneemann at the 15:31 mark of the second half.
Kelly Pepper tallied the final Calvin goal of the afternoon, up a player.
Senior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) controlled the draw control game on Saturday, finishing with 10, compared to six total for Otterbein.
Freshman Meghan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) recorded her first victory as a Knight, finishing with four saves and a game-high five ground balls.
Genevieve Schneemann followed behind with four ground balls.
The Knights featured a balanced attack against Otterbein, with nine players recording a goal. Amanda Davio and Emma Tilma both scored four goals.
Kelly Pepper had a career day against the Cardinals with a career-high 11 points on three goals and eight assists. The eight assists are also a career high.
The Knights return to action on March 19 under the Florida sun. The Maroon and Gold will play three games, starting with Williams.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 13, Northland 2

ASHLAND, Wisc. - Calvin picked up its second straight victory, defeating host Northland College 13-2 Saturday afternoon.

The victory completes a successful weekend swing through Wisconsin for the Knights as it came on the heels of an 8-7 win at Marian College Thursday afternoon.

Calvin (2-4) led 8-0 at halftime and added two goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth to seal the win.

Freshman attacker Joe Son (Aldie, Va./John Champe HS) had a huge afternoon with three goals and four assists.

Freshman Jacob Gandara (Santa Clarita, Ca./West Ranch HS) had three goals and four ground balls.

Junior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) and freshman Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./John Adams HS) had two goals apiece.

Senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS), junior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) and freshman Luke VanderKooy all had one goal with Winkler chalking up an assist.

Sophomore Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) had four assists on the afternoon while freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) also had an assist.

Bontreger and senior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth HS) had five ground balls apiece. Foster and senior Derek VanderBrug (Woburn, Mass./Lexington Christian Academy) had four ground balls each.

Freshman Mitchell Wong (Schaumburg, Il./Schaumburg HS) saw the lion's share of duty in goal, making 12 saves on 14 shots. Sophomore Mitchell Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) also saw time in goal for the Knights.

"It was a great way to end the weekend trip," said Calvin men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "Some of our young guys took a huge step forward this weekend and grew a lot. The offense is really starting to gel and we are learning how to play with one another. We're excited for practice this coming week to continue the process as we get ready for spring break."

Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Doylestown, Pennsylvania, to take on Delaware Valley University in a match set to begin at 1 p.m.

BASEBALL
Franklin 10, Calvin 7
Franklin 12, Calvin 8

FRANKLIN, Ind. - Calvin came up on the short end of the scoreboard twice Saturday afternoon at Franklin College as the Knights fell 10-7 and 12-8 to the Grizzlies.

Calvin (1-4) competed to the end in both games but were unable to overcame a strong Franklin hitting attack.

In game one, Franklin (8-0) jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Calvin chipped away, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth and then putting up five runs in the sixth to close to within 8-7. Franklin scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh however to seal the win.

Junior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) went 3-for-4 in the game one defeat. Sophomore catcher Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had a pair of hits with an RBI. Senior Nate DeZwaan (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had a hit and two RBI.

Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) and sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) both had doubles.
Calvin struggled defensively in game one, committing seven errors which led to five unearned runs.

Junior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) got the start on the hill and took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.

In game two, Calvin roared out to an 8-2 lead. DeZwaan belted a base-clearing double in the third to put the Knights up 3-1. Junior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Redfield added RBI singles in the fourth and junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS) added a sacrifice fly to put the Knights up 6-2.

Hyndiuk and Kuperus came up with RBI singles in the fifth to put the Knights up 8-2 but the Knights did not score again.

Franklin meanwhile began to chip away at the Calvin lead, scoring three runs in the fifth. The Grizzlies then scored four in the sixth to take a 9-8 lead and sealed the win with three runs in the seventh.

The game featured 30 hits - 13 by Calvin and 17 by Franklin.

Redfield, DeZwaan, freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS), Kuperus and senior James Boice (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kelloggsville HS) all had two hits for the Knights.

DeZwaan and Keane both had doubles.

Keane got the start and went four innings for the Knights, striking out five. Sophomore Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss in relief to fall to 0-1 on the season.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it travels to Transylvania University (Ky.) for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.)
