MEQUON, Wis. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team spoiled the Sabres inaugural game in their home state of Wisconsin with an 8-7 victory. The Knights picked up their first victory of the year and send Marian to 0-5 on the year.
"The guys have been working hard the past couple of weeks at improving," said Calvin head coach Dave Hoger. "Not only their physical abilities, but also their mental game. It was nice to get the first positive result this season and we're looking forward to continuing the process to get better."
Sophomore Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi) started the scoring on a man advantage in the first quarter.

MEN'S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Jason Wolters claimed the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week for men's tennis title on Monday for matches through March 4. Wolters helped the Calvin men's tennis team go 4-0 last week on the road. Wolters clinched the Saturday evening match at Lake Forest.
"I am really happy that Jason is getting honored for his play," said head coach John Ross. "He played very well last week and he did not fold under pressure. The Lake Forest match came down to him and he battled against very tough competition. I am proud of Jason and the entire team."
A junior from Hudsonville, Michigan, Wolters is claiming the honor for the first time in his career.
Wolters started the week with a victory at No. 1 doubles with senior Matt VanWinkle. The duo downed Ben Wordell and Jeremy Ryno of Wisconsin Lutheran, 8-1.
On Friday, he defeated Marcus Austin of Ripon at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
With the match tied at four, the match against Lake Forest came down to Wolters. After falling to Joe Bove in the first set, 2-6, Wolters forced a third set with a convincing 6-1 victory in the second set. Neither man gave an inch in the tiebreaker, but Wolters came out on top with a 12-10 victory to send the Knights to 5-1 on the season.
Wolters and the Knights are back in action on Saturday at home against Illinois Tech.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Madeline Brouwer earned the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week for women's tennis title on Monday for matches through March 4. Brouwer claimed the honor for her performances against Wooster and Marietta on Saturday, where she went 4-0 on the weekend.
"I am thrilled that Maddie has been named the MIAA Athlete of the Week," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Maddie has been a very consistent player for us week in and week out. She has been one of our hardest workers in practice every day and that is showing up in her match play. While we have many goals in front of us yet, this is a nice honor for Maddie, showing her hard work and continued improvement is paying off.
A freshman from Hudsonville, Michigan Brouwer is claiming the honor for the first time in her career. This is the third time this season that a Knight has been named Athlete of the Week in women's tennis with Leah Newhof winning in September and Anna Asfour doing so in February.
Brouwer went 2-0 on the weekend at No. 1 doubles with Leah Newhof. The freshman duo topped the Scots' team of Joy Li and Morgan Wagers, 8-5. They then brought out the broom against Marietta, beating Victoria Xie and Latrice Nelson, 8-0.
At No. 2 singles, Madeline Brouwer opened the weekend edging out Sarah Duran of Wooster, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
The Calvin freshman cruised in the second match of the day against Katie Kitchen of Marietta with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
In dual play, Brouwer has a record of 4-2 at No. 2 singles. She is also 5-1 at No. 1 doubles in 2018.
Brouwer and the Knights return to play on March 19 against North Central in Orlando, Florida.
SOFTBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Anna Gernant was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for her performance at the Transylvania Pioneer Classic on Friday and Saturday. Gernant helped the Knights go 4-0 on the weekend.
"Anna had a good weekend on the mound for our team," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "Despite the cold weather, playing four games in 24 hours against quality opponents and her not quite feeling at 100 percent, she brought everything she had in both starts. Our defense made great plays behind her in the field. This is a nice honor for Anna and our team."
A junior from West Des Moines, Iowa, Gernant is claiming MIAA Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time this season and second time in her career.
On Saturday against Olivet, she broke her own school record with 19 strikeouts against Olivet. She set the previous school record of 18 strikeouts against Edgewood. She only allowed two hits in the win.
She recorded her first victory of the year on Friday against the No. 12-ranked Pioneers of Transylvania. Gernant had nine strikeouts and kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard with a 3-0 victory.
Gernant and the Knights return to action on March 17 against Chicago in Clermont, Florida.
