Calvin-Hope Women's Basketball Rivalry Set to Renew Saturday Afternoon;
Track and Field Teams Open 2018 Indoor Campaigns
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin-Hope women's basketball rivalry will renew Saturday afternoon at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse with the opening tip set for 3:00 p.m.
First place will be on the line when the two teams meet as Hope enters the game 6-0 in MIAA play while Calvin is a game behind at 5-1.
Hope enters the game 15-0 overall and ranked second nationally in one national poll and third in another. Calvin enters the game 10-5 overall.
A year ago, Hope swept the regular season series but Calvin edged Hope 67-65 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
Calvin leads the all-time series 71-47.

FRIDAY RECAP
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Calvin's distance runners opened up their 2018 indoor track and field campaigns at the Grand Valley State Eubanks Invitational Friday afternoon.
Calvin took 11th place with four points.
Junior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) was seventh in the mile run (4:26.96).
In the 3,000 meter run, senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) was sixth (8:36.33), sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was 10th (8:42.94) and sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was 13th (8:48.51).
THURSDAY RECAP
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin opened its 2018 indoor season with a non-conference dual meet scrimmage against Albion on Thursday inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Calvin won the dual meet 63-38.
Junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) won the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.47. He also won the long jump with a leap of 20-5 1/4.
In the 300 meter dash, sophomore Jacob Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) took second (38.80), junior Marcus James (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took third (38.88) and freshman John Van Den Heuvel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took fourth (39.48).
Calvin took the top five spots in the 600 meter run led by senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) winning the race in a time of 1:23.55. Junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was second (1:25.56), junior Josh Van Dyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) third (1:26.17), senior Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) fourth (1:26.23) and junior Jacob Buday (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Hackett HS) fifth (1:29.21).
Calvin put together a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,000 meter run with senior Nate Veldboom (East Jordan, Mich./Ellsworth HS) winning in a time of 2:45.03 with sophomore Andrew Huston (Elgin, Il./Harvest Christian Academy) second (3:26.16) and sophomore Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) third (3:27.73).
Sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was third in the 60 meter hurdles (9.20), junior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) fourth (9.32) and senior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) fifth (9.61).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Valentine, Peterson, Vermeulen and junior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) took first with a time of 3:35.79 while its 4x200 meter relay of sophomore David Byl (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Sam Veenstra, Williams and Huston took second in a time of 1:40.65.
In the high jump, sophomore Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) won with a jump of 5-10 3/4.
The Knights took the top three spots in the pole vault with sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) winning on fewer misses, reaching a height of 13-6. Senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was second (13-6) and senior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) was third (12-6).
In the shot put, Calvin took four out of the top five spots led by junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who was second (42-6 3/4), sophomore Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) who was third (42-4 1/4), sophomore Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) who was fourth (39-6 3/4) and freshman Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) who was fifth (38-2 1/4).
In the weight throw, VanHouten was second (46-7 1/2), Reynolds was third (45-10) and Wolfe fourth (43-11 3/4).

In the mile run, sophomore Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was 11th with a time of 5:28.14.
In the 3,000 meters, junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) was second (10:08.33) and sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (10:23.62). Sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville-South HS) was 11th (10:55.83).

Senior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) won the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.41 that currently ranks as the second-fastest time in the Great Lakes Region in Division III this winter.
In the 60 meter dash, sophomore Jackie Amissah-Nunoo (Accra, Ghana/Akosombo International School) was fourth (8.45). Freshman Madison Brink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was fifth (47.31) in the 300 meter dash.
Junior Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) won the high jump (4-9). Senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) won the pole vault (9-6 1/4) while freshman Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was second (8-11 3/4).
Freshman Renee Miller (Marlette, Mich./Marlette HS) was second in the long jump (15-9 3/4) while Erin Van Lenten was third (15-5 3/4).
In the shot put, sophomore Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was second (29-3 3/4) while Erin Van Lenten was third (25-3).
