GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team picked up a key conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Trine 89-69 at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin outrebounded the Thunder 50-20 in the victory, and four Knights finished in double-digits for scoring. Freshman Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma) came off the bench to post a double-double, leading all players with a Calvin career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds while also adding a pair of blocks.
With the win, Calvin improves to 6-9 on the year with a 2-2 MIAA mark to be tied for third in the conference standings.
Calvin sophomore Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) got the Knights on the board first, knocking down a triple in the first minute of play. Calvin and Trine exchanged points to knot the score at seven early in the contest.
The Knights used an eight-point run to build a sizeable lead. After points on both ends, junior Carolos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming) drained a three-pointer to put the Knights ahead. Freshman Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) followed with a triple of his own before Amoros-Gutierrez earned a steal and capitalized on the ensuing fast-break layup. When Trine called its first timeout, Calvin held a 17-9 lead.
Calvin continued to roll, using a well-balanced scoring effort to maintain its double-digit advantage as the midpoint of the half neared. After the ten-minute mark passed, the Knights widened the gap to 16 using a seven-point run. Junior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian), DeVries and senior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) contributed to the scoring surge.
In the final four minutes of the first half, Walter scored seven points as Calvin outscored Trine 12-4. The Knights headed into the break with a 46-27 lead.
At the half, Calvin held a 23-12 rebounding advantage, including 10 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second chance points.
The Knights continued their strong offensive effort early in the second half. DeVries led Calvin with seven points in the first five minutes of the half, while Bykerk added a dunk and senior Tony Canonie (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) sunk a three to give Calvin a 58-38 lead with fifteen minutes remaining.
Trine used back-to-back buckets to chip Calvin's lead to fifteen points, but the Knights responded with a 6-2 run to regain their 20-point lead and force a Thunder timeout with 11:45 left to play.
With just under six minutes remaining, Wilks converted on a three-point play to give the Knights a 25-point lead, their largest of the contest. In the final five minutes of play, Walter added eight points as the home team rolled to a 20-point victory.
DeVries followed Walter, finishing with 21 points and seven boards. Luke Morrison added 14 points and Bykerk chipped in 10, also earning six rebounds apiece. Morrison also dished out five assists, while Canonie led the Knights with six. Wilks had an impressive night on the boards, snagging 10 rebounds.
Calvin's bench contributed 37 points in the win. The Knights shot 44% from the floor and a strong 92.9% from the free throw line.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Hope 58, Calvin 51
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin women's basketball team fell short in a hard-fought battle at No. 2 Hope on Saturday afternoon. The Flying Dutch walked away with a 58-51 victory. Calvin moves to 10-6 on the season and 5-2 in MIAA play. Hope remains perfect at 16-0 and 7-0 in MIAA action.
"Congratulations to Hope, it was a gritty performance and they made the plays when they had to," said head coach Chuck Winkelman. "They are having an outstanding year and they are willing their way to some really hard-fought wins."
After trailing 0-4, Calvin took the lead for the first time in the game at the 9-8 mark with a jump shot from Kara Minderhoud. A jump shot from sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) pushed the lead up to 11-8 with over five minutes to play in the first quarter. The Flying Dutch cut the Calvin lead to 14-13, but senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) scored a layup in the final seconds to give the Knights a 16-13 lead after 10 minutes.
The Flying Dutch regained the lead with a 7-0 run to start the second quarter. A jump shot from Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) snapped the streak for the Knights. A 4-0 run at the end of the half gave Hope a 29-23 lead at halftime.
Hope pushed the lead up to 10 points on three occasions in the third quarter. Trailing 29-39, the Knights used a 9-0 run to get right back in the game, including seven-straight points from Bre Luurtsema.
A three-point basket from Ali Spayde gave the Knights a 41-40 lead. With the basket, Spayde moved into a tie for first place in the career three-point basket list in Calvin women's basketball program history with 187.
Hope headed into the fourth quarter with a 45-43 lead.
The two teams found themselves in a defensive battle in the fourth quarter. The Flying Dutch pushed the lead up to 50-43, but the Knights did not back down and cut the lead to 54-51 with three minutes remaining. Hope sealed the deal with a 4-0 run in the final three minutes.
The Knights made more field goals than the Flying Dutch on Saturday, 22-21. The Maroon and Gold had an assist on 10 of the 22 baskets.
Nicole Meyer led Knight with a game-high 10 rebounds and game-high three assists.
Bre Luurtsema finished with a team-high 18 points, she also notched a game-high four steals, four rebounds, and two assists.
Ali Spayde checked in with 15 points, junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.
Calvin returns to MIAA action on Wednesday against Kalamazoo at Van Noord Arena.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin 177, Albion 122
ALBION, Mich. - The No. 12 ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving team started 2018 with a successful Saturday. Calvin downed Albion 177-122 to move to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in MIAA action. The Knights won 13 events on Saturday.
"The women showed some depth winning in convincing fashion," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We will move forward and continue preparing for the championship meets."
The Knights started the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) broke the pool record at 1:49.68.
Junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) touched the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:59.80.
Calvin went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, leading the way was junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) at 1:59.71. In second place was junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) at 2:01.36 and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) in third place at 2:01.64.
Hannah Chao earned the victory in the 100-yard backstroke at 59.94. She also won the 200-yard backstroke at 2:12.00 and the 200-yard individual medley at 2:15.90.
The Knights painted the diving well maroon and gold on Saturday. On the 1-meter board, senior Sarah Bradley won at 261.20 points and Joselyn Smith was in second place at 225.30. Bradley also won the 3-meter event at 277.50 points and Smith placed second at 225.50.
Abby Van Harn flexed her muscles in the 50-yard freestyle and won at 24.03. Van Harn also won the 100-yard freestyle at 52.78.
The Maroon and Gold went 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle on Saturday. Anna Serino was the winner at 5:24.84, in second place, was Kendall Murphy at 5:28.63 and Libby Engle finished in third place at 5:35.91.
The Knights made a splash in the final event of the day in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Madelyn Smith, Rachel Mattson, Anna Serino and Abby Van Harn won at 3:39.23, six seconds faster than the next closest relay.
The Knights return to action on Friday at Rose Hulman.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Albion 172, Calvin 129
ALBION, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team fell at Albion on Saturday, 171-129. Calvin moves to 2-3 in dual meets and 1-1 against MIAA schools. Calvin won six events on Saturday.
"The men had a rough day on the road against the defending champions," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We will move forward and continue preparing for the championship meets."
Calvin started the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman) finished at 1:35.41.
Julian Iturbe notched the first victory of the day for the Calvin men. Iturbe clocked in a winning time of 1:46.53. He also won in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:00.22.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Ben Holstege broke the pool record at 51.32.
Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was victorious on the 1-meter boards on Saturday with 297.35 points.
Tanner Vincent placed second in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:59.40.
Jared Britton finished in second place at 22.06 in the 50-yard freestyle.
In the 100-yard freestyle, senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) recorded a second-place finish at 49.35.
Ben Holstege was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke at 1:57.08.
The Knights went 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle. Julian Iturbe won at 4:50.06 and Tim Randall placed second at 4:58.10.
The Knights return to action on Friday at Rose Hulman.
ACHA ICE HOCKEY
Calvin 3, Aquinas 2
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 23 ranked Calvin hockey team defeated crosstown rival Aquinas 3-2 on Saturday night. The win propels the Knights to 11-8-1 on the season.
With the victory, the ACHA Division I Knights and Saint split the season series at 2-2.
The Knights took an early lead with two first-period goals. Senior Ryan Bradley (Clarkston, Mich. / Royal Oak Shrine Catholic) started the scoring on Saturday. Freshman Jared Virtanen (Abbotsford, British Columbia / Fort Frances Lakers) put the Knights up 2-0.
The Calvin defense held tough in the first period, killing off a five-on-three power play and not allowing a goal.
The Saints did not fold and scored two goals to even out the scoreboard.
Freshman Garrett Medina (Freeland, Mich. / Forest Lake Lakers) broke the tie late in the second when he wrapped the puck around the net and snuck the puck in past the Aquinas keeper's right side.
The Calvin defense anchored by junior Alex Gross (Fort Worth, Texas / Northern Cyclones) stood tall in the third period and some big saves kept the Saints off the scoreboard.
