Women's Basketball Defeats Albion;
Men's Basketball Falls at Hope in Rivalry Match
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 82, Albion 59
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's basketball team picked up an important 82-59 conference victory over visiting Albion Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.
The Knights (10-5 overall, 5-1 MIAA) move a game ahead of the Britons (10-4 overall, 4-2 MIAA) in the league standings and are now tied for second place with Trine and sit just a game behind league-leading Hope heading into a Saturday rivalry showdown in Holland.
Calvin sprinted out to a 40-28 halftime lead by hitting 5-of-8 from three-point range while shooting 55.6 percent overall. Defensively, the Knights limited Albion to 29.4 percent field goal shooting in the first half.
Albion scored the first five points of the second half to slice the deficit down to seven points at 40-33 early in the third quarter.
Leading 44-37, Calvin responded with a 7-0 run to build a double-digit lead it held the rest of the way.
Calvin was led in scoring by senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) who poured in 23 points to go with seven assists and four rebounds.
Sophomore Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) notched her first collegiate double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Minderhoud knocked in a pair of timely three-pointers and chalked up three assists.
Junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 13 points and eight boards. Senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had 11 points. Junior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) had 12 points and also a pair of key three-point baskets in a reserve role.
Sophomore Nicole Meyer (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower HS) had one of her best games of the season, scoring six points and grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals.
As a team, Calvin was credited with 20 assists on 30 field goals.
Albion was led by Brittany Leutz with 15 points. The Britons shot just 33.9 percent from the field and were just 7-of-23 (.304) from three-point range.
Calvin shot 50.8 percent overall and 9-of-19 (.474) from three-point territory.
The Knights will travel to rival Hope on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game at DeVos Fieldhouse.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Hope 77, Calvin 72
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's basketball team fell on the road at Hope on Wednesday, 77-72. Calvin moves to 5-9 on the year and 1-2 in MIAA play. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak in the rivalry.
The Knights opened the game on a 13-0 run in the first four minutes. Sophomore Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian) drained two three-point baskets in the run.
The Flying Dutchmen cut the Calvin lead to 30-26, but Calvin responded with a 12-2 run. Junior Jason Walter (Coloma, Mich./Coloma) led the Knights with five points in the run.
A late Hope basket cut the lead to 42-30 at halftime.
Hope opened the second half on a 10-0 run to get right back in the game. Junior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian) snapped the skid with a jump shot.
The Maroon and Gold pushed the lead up to 63-51 with over eight minutes remaining in the game with a jump shot from Austin Bykerk.
A 13-2 run for Hope got the Dutch within one point with 5:26 remaining.
Hope got its first lead of the game at 71-69 with 1:02 remaining in the game.
A three-point basket from Austin Bykerk cut the lead to three points, but Hope made six free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
"It was a hard-fought game and a tough loss," said Calvin head coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I thought they came out of the locker room in the second half with great energy. We did not, there was a pretty significant difference right off the bat. I thought we recovered well. We talked about how rebounding was going to be the most important factor on who was going to win the game at halftime we were up 21-13 and we were outrebounded 28-16 in the second half."
Austin Bykerk led the Knights with 15 points on Wednesday. Derrick DeVries and Jason Walters both finished with 14 points. Junior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming) was right behind with 13 points.
Walters had himself a block party against the Dutch with nine blocks. He also finished with seven rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Sophomore Alex Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led Calvin with nine rebounds.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights finally return to Van Noord Arena against Trine at 3 p.m.
