Anna Kamp Named Division III Honda Athlete of the Year Nominee for Women's Volleyball;
Women's Basketball Cruises Past Comets;
Swimming and Diving Teams Move Up In National Rankings
VOLLEYBALL
Anna Kamp, a junior from Calvin College, was named the DIII Honda Athlete of the Year nominee for Volleyball as announced by Executive Director Chris Voelz of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda.
Kamp is now designated one of 11 finalists for the prestigious DIII Honda Athlete of the Year. This will be voted on at the end of the academic year by national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the CWSA program, now in its 42nd year.
"I feel very honored to win this award," said Kamp. "I would like to thank my parents, coaches, teammates and friends for the never-ending love and support. I would also like to thank Calvin College for all the opportunities I've had!"
Hailing from Orland Park, Ill., Kamp was recently named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Player of the Year and led her team to the NCAA Championship semi-finals. She is a two-time AVCA first-team All-American and was named the Player of the Year for the AVCA Great Lakes Region and the MIAA. She is a two-time MIAA first-team honoree after helping her team capture the MIAA tournament and regular season titles.
On the season, the junior outside hitter led her team in kills (480) and kills per set (4.14), while adding 282 digs, 41 assists and hitting .274. Her kills total ranks 15th nationally and she ranked 21st nationally in kills per set.
"Anna is a very talented player who hasn't even reached her peak yet," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "She is a joy to coach and I love how much energy and personality she has. She is very humble and puts her teammates ahead of herself. She is a servant leader."
Anna is the fourth sister in the Kamp family to earn a nomination as the Honda DIII Athlete of the Year after her sisters Maggie (2014), Lizzie (2012) and Rebecca (2011).
All Honda Sports nominees from DIII and DII become a finalist for the prestigious 2017 Honda Athlete of the Year in their respective divisions, presented in a live telecast on CBS Sports on June 25, 2018, in downtown Los Angeles. The Honda Sports nominees are recognized in 11 DIII and DII NCAA-sanctioned sports; cross country, basketball, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, and track & field.
The CWSA, in its 42nd year, honors the nation's top NCAA women athletes recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 79, Olivet 25
OLIVET, Mich. - Calvin picked up a resounding 79-25 conference victory at Olivet Wednesday evening inside the Cutler Events Center.
Now owners of a two-game win streak, the Knights are now 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA.
Calvin solved Olivet's full-court pressure defense early on Wednesday evening and led 21-10 at the end of one quarter. The Knights then outscored Olivet (4-4 overall, 1-3 MIAA) 28-5 in the second quarter to roar out to a 49-15 halftime lead.
The Knights did not look back from that point on in cruising to the lop-sided victory.
Senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) led a balanced Calvin scoring attack with 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Sophomore Kara Minderhoud (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) matched a career scoring high with 14 points as she was 6 of 9 from the field and snared five rebounds. Senior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and junior Becca Richards (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) added 13 points apiece. Junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) chipped in with six points and seven rebounds.
Calvin forced Olivet into 26 turnovers. The Knights outrebounded Olivet 56-42 and converted 28 of 41 (.683) at the free throw line.
With her 14 points Wednesday evening, Spayde moved past former Calvin teammate Kayla Engelhard and into 11th place on the Calvin career scoring list, boosting her career total to 1,157 points.
By grabbing five rebounds Wednesday, Luurtsema boosted her career rebounding total to 545. She is is ninth place on the Calvin career rebounding list.
The Knights will now break until December 29 when they face No. 21 Marietta College in the first round of the Otterbein University Smoky Ballenger Classic.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin College women's swimming and diving team has moved up four spots in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll.
The Knights are ranked 12th in the latest Division III CSCAA regular season Top 25 poll of the season.
Calvin was ranked 16th in the first CSCAA Division III regular season poll and was ranked 24th in the CSCAA preseason poll.
The first semester of the 2017-18 Calvin swimming and diving season has been a successful one with the Knights producing several times and performances that rank high amongst the NCAA III leaders. Along the way, the Knights have also claimed a pair of dual meet wins and strong showings at the Calvin Quad and at the Calvin Winter Invite.
The Knights are currently preparing for a Christmas break training trip to the island country of Trinidad and Tobago.
