WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Ali Spayde its Player of the Week in women's basketball for games played through Dec. 18.
"A great display of claiming responsibility and leading well," said Calvin head coach Chuck Winkelman. "A career best seven rebounds, as painful as the loss at Trine was to all of us, I love how Ali responded to grow her game in other areas that are needed to win championships."
A senior from Lewis Center, Ohio, Spayde is claiming the honor for the second time this year and the third time in her career.
She leads the MIAA in scoring, averaging 23.0 points per game, with 207 total points.
Last Wednesday, Spayde matched her career high with seven rebounds against Aquinas. She finished the game with 22 points and four assists.
Spayde and the Knights return to action on Wednesday at Olivet.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The first semester of the 2017-18 Calvin swimming and diving season has been a successful one with the Knights producing several times and performances that rank high amongst the NCAA III leaders. Along the way, the Knights have also claimed a pair of dual meet wins and strong showings at the Calvin Quad and at the Calvin Winter Invite.
As a team, the Calvin women are ranked 16th in the Division III College Swim Coaches Association of America Top 25 Poll while the Calvin men are ranked 17th.
The Knights are currently preparing for a Christmas break training trip to the island country of Trinidad and Tobago. The Calvin Sports Information Office recently sat down with Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos to reflect back on the first semester and also to look ahead to Christmas break and the months ahead.

CALVIN SAAC UPDATE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has raised $1,332 and collected 50 new toys for West Michigan-area kids. The new toys will be donated to the Grand Rapids area Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
The $1,332 will be donated to Access of West Michigan's Holiday Giving Network. The Holiday Giving Network provides holiday meals and gifts for West Michigan families in need. "It is difficult to get monetary donations for the Holiday Giving Network because there are so many great places to give to this time of year," said Access of West Michigan Co-Executive Director Emma Garcia. "This donation is incredibly helpful for us and the Holiday Giving Network program."
Calvin's SAAC is comprised of at least two representatives from each 21 intercollegiate teams and ACHA Ice Hockey. SAAC acts to promote community amongst athletic teams, Calvin College and the West Michigan area.
"Each fall our SAAC members engage our athletic department in a service project, and this year our student-athletes were interested in collecting toys with the hopes of brightening the Christmas holiday for West Michigan children," said Calvin SAAC advisor Becky Hilgert. "Our athletic teams worked together and solicited donations from fans attending Calvin athletic events this fall and winter."
Calvin SAAC members also created a promotional video for the donation drive.
"Our SAAC members had a great time sponsoring this project and collecting donations for children," said Calvin SAAC student-athlete president Emma Hall. "It was great to see our student-athletes come together with the goal of helping children this holiday season."
NCAA Division III SAAC represents the student-athlete to have a voice on campus. SAAC members offer input on NCAA legislation, identify student-athlete issues and encourage student-athlete community outreach.
