CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR DECEMBER 21, 2017
Men's Soccer Receives United Soccer Coaches College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award
MEN'S SOCCER
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The United Soccer Coaches announced on Thursday the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award recipients for the Fall 2017 high school and college seasons and the Calvin men's soccer team has been so honored. Today's awards recognize a total of 103 collegiate teams across the country for exhibiting fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game.
Calvin is one of only three men's teams at all levels to receive the award.
The Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award is given to United Soccer Coaches members at four levels. Teams honored at the platinum level went an entire season without a player or coach receiving a yellow card or red card. Teams honored at the gold (1-10%), silver (11-30%) and bronze (31-50%) levels are based on a percentage calculated by the total number of cards received by players/coaches divided by the team's total number of games played.
Led by head coach Ryan Souders, the Calvin men's soccer team was honored at the bronze level. In 23 total games played, Calvin received just eight yellow cards and no red cards during the recently completed 2017 season.
"This is a wonderful team award," said Souders. "To be one of three men's teams recognized at all levels is really impressive and is a fantastic testament to both the quality and character of our men. Achieving this award has been one of our team goals and we are glad to have reached it."
Calvin has now received the United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year. The Knights were recognized at the silver level in 2016.
This fall, Calvin advanced to the 2017 Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament as the Knights advanced to the national tournament for the 10th time in the last 11 years. The Knights finished 21-1-1 on the season, claiming MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles along the way. Calvin finished the year ranked fifth in the final D3soccer.com Top 25 poll and seventh in the final United Soccer Coaches Division III Top 25 poll.
