MEN'S GOLF

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team captured first place at MIAA Jamboree #4 on Monday afternoon with a team score of 299 strokes.

Monday's tournament was hosted by Kalamazoo College at the Kalamazoo Country Club.

Calvin finished one stroke ahead of Hope on Monday as the Flying Dutchmen put together a team score of 300. The Knights now lead Hope in the overall MIAA team standings by 10 strokes.

The final MIAA overall standings will be determined by the 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament, scheduled to take place October 13 and 14 at the Battle Creek Country Club.

Freshman Sam Holland (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central HS) led the way for Calvin with two-under-par round of 69 to claim tournament medalist honors. Holland birdied the final three holes to take first place by four strokes with Josh Gibson and Andrew Goble of Hope tying for second with rounds of 73.

Seniors John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian HS) and Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had rounds of 75. Junior Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a round of 80 and junior Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich./Brandywine HS) a round of 86.

Senior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) competed individually for Calvin on Monday and produced a round of 82.

Calvin battled strong winds throughout the day but found a way to get the job done according to head coach Brian Bolt. "The wind was up the greens were very tough today," said Bolt. "All of the guys battled to produce decent scores. Sam Holland came up with a big clutch performance. I don't think the weather conditions affected him much. Our goal moving forward is to keep on improving and focus on one hole at a time."

Calvin has taken at least a share of first place in all four MIAA Jamborees this fall. Holland is the second tournament medalist from Calvin as Van Noord was the tournament medalist last Monday at MIAA Jamboree #3.

The Knights will now break until the MIAA Fall Tournament in Battle Creek.
