Baseball Falls to Adrian in MIAA Tournament Opener;
VanHouten Named MIAA Most Outstanding Field Performer in Men's Track and Field;
Women's Track and Field Lands Five on All-MIAA Teams

ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin dropped an 8-2 decision to top-seeded Adrian Wednesday night in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

The Knights (19-22) will face rival Hope (24-17) in an elimination game Thursday afternoon at Adrian's Nicolay Field.

Adrian (31-10) used a three-run fifth inning to build a 4-0 lead and added a run in the eight and three in the eighth to pull away for the win.

Calvin scored a run in the eighth and in the ninth but did not further damage.
Adrian collected 12 hits and six walks in the contest.

Calvin had seven hits in the loss with senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) and freshman Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) picking up two hits apiece.

Junior Jaimie Bristol (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) took the loss for the Knights to fall to 1-7 on the year. Junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) also tossed two innings of relief.

Calvin's MIAA Tournament game against Hope on Thursday is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Nine members of the MIAA champion Calvin men's track and field team have been named to the All-MIAA team.

Headlining the list is sophomore Brendan VanHouten who has been named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer as well as to a spot on the All-MIAA team.

Joining Van Houten on the All-MIAA team from Calvin are juniors Ethan Valentine, Andrew Philipose, and Noah Buteyn; sophomores Jamison Koeman, James Jeninga and Luke Peterson and freshmen Sam Veenstra and Caleb Ferguson.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, VanHouten made MIAA history last week at the MIAA Championships with a triple crown effort, winning the shot put, discus and hammer throw events. VanHouten won the shot put wtih a career best heave of 47-4 1/4, topping his previous best by more than a foot. He continued on to win the discus with a throw of 141-1 and the hammer with a career-best mark of 172-6.

VanHouten is the first individual to win the shot-disc-hammer triple crown since Joseph Maddock of Albion achieved the feat in 1902. VanHouten is the sixth individual in Calvin men's track and field history to be named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer.

A native of Mason, Ohio, Valentine is receiving All-MIAA honors for the second consecutive year. A graduate of William Mason High School, Valentine captured the MIAA title in the 400 meters last week, cruising in with a time of 47.46 that currently ranks third nationally. At the MIAA Championships, Valentine also ran the anchor leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team that clocked in with a time of 3:20.11. He also finished fourth in the 200 meter dash (22.03).

Buteyn is also receiving All-MIAA honors for the second consecutive year. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Buteyn finished fourth in the 400 meter dash (49.57), eighth in the 200 meter dash (23.02) and ran a leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team.

Jeninga is also receiving All-MIAA honors for the second straight year. A native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Jeninga took second in the 800 meter run (1:54.60) last week at the MIAA Championships. A graduate of Milwaukee Lutheran High School, he also ran a leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team.

Peterson hails from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. He is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Peterson took sixth in the 800 meter run (1:58.42) at the MIAA Championships and ran a leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team.

A native of Mount Prospect, Illinois, Philipose is receiving All-MIAA honors for the second time this academic year as he also earned first team all-conference accolades in cross country. At the MIAA Championships last Friday, Philipose won the league title in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 32:34.56.

Sophomore Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian High School) is receiving All-MIAA honors after winning the 5,000 meters last Friday with a time of 15:26.95. This past fall, he was named to the All-MIAA first team honors in cross country.

Ferguson is from Naperville, Illinois. He is a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School. At the MIAA Championships he claimed the league title in 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:18.49 that currently ranks 17th nationally.

Veenstra is from North Haledon, New Jersey. He is a graduate of Eastern Christian High School. At the MIAA Championships, he captured the league title in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.59.

At the MIAA Championships, Calvin took first place with 266 points. The MIAA title was Calvin's 29th in the last 31 years.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Five members of the Calvin women's track and field team have received All-MIAA honors.
Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are seniors Michaela Meckes and Lauren Strohbehn, juniors Jenna Dyksen and Bethany Van Eck and freshman Allison Rozell.
Meckes, Strohbehn and Dyksen are receiving All-MIAA honors for the third consecutive year. Van Eck and Rozell are receiving the honor for the first time.
A native of Bay City, Michigan, Meckes captured the MIAA discus title last week at the MIAA Championships with a throw of 139-4. It marked the third consecutive MIAA discus title for Meckes. A graduate of Saginaw Valley Lutheran High School, she is the fourth member of her family to capture a league title in an individual event. Older brothers Nate, Josh and Aaron Meckes were all MIAA event champions on the Calvin men's track and field team. At the MIAA Field Day, Michaela Meckes also placed third in the shot put with a throw of 40-6.
Strohbehn hails from Stillwater, Minnesota. She is a graduate of St. Croix Preparatory School. At the MIAA Championships, she captured the 5,000 meter run title with a time of 18:00.42. It marked the second consecutive MIAA title for Strohbehn in the 5,000 meter run.
Dyksen is from Hawthorne, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Hawthorne High School. At the MIAA Championships, Dyksen scored 38 individual points for the Knights, winning the 100 meter hurdles (14.78), 400 meter hurdles (1:04.14) and triple jump (36-1) while also placing second in the long jump (17-4). She also ran a leg on Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that placed fifth.
Van Eck is from Clifton, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Eastern Christian High School. At the MIAA Championships, she was the MIAA high jump champion with a jump of 5-1. She also placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.87).
Rozell is from Grand Rapids. She is a graduate of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern High School. At the MIAA Championships, she was the league champion in the javelin throw (126-6) while placing sixth in the triple jump (33-9).
The Calvin women's track and field team took first place at the MIAA Championships with a team score of 215 points. With the first place finish, Calvin captured its 28th consecutive league title which ranks as the longest active championship streak in MIAA women's athletics history.
