MEN'S GOLF
WEST OLIVE, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team picked up a key victory at the second MIAA automatic qualifier to stay in the race for the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The Knights finished the day 280 strokes, two strokes ahead of Hope in second place. The victory helps the Knights cut into the Hope lead and puts Calvin at 581 strokes, seven behind Hope.
"As a whole, the team played great in a big moment,' said Calvin head coach Brian Bolt. "They showed mental toughness today and followed the pattern we have been working on. We cannot wait until tomorrow."
Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian) led the way for the Knights with his lowest round at Calvin at 67 strokes, finishing four shots under par in second place. Van Noord was named a NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year semifinalist on Friday.
Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished the day three shots under par at 68 strokes to finish in third place. Friday marked the first time this season that VanScoyk has shot under 70.
Sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) shot an even par round of 71 for the Knights on Friday to take sixth place. The round of 71 ties his lowest round at Calvin.
Junior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia / Morning Star Academy) recorded a round of 74 for Calvin tied for ninth place. Friday's round was the second lowest of the season for Lumbantoruan.
Freshman Joshua Song (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) tallied a round of 81 on Friday to stand in 19th place.
Josh Gibson of Hope was the medalist of Friday at 65 strokes.
The final of three rounds will take place on Saturday to determine who will have the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships for the MIAA.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A group of Calvin's distance runners competed at the Hillsdale Gina Relays Thursday and Friday night while Calvin's throwers competed at the Calvin Tune-Up Invitational Friday evening.
On Thursday night at the Hillsdale Gina Relays, junior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) was eighth in the men's open steeplechase competition with a time of 9:58.36. In the men's open 5,000 meter run, freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was 15th in a time of 14:53.96.
On Friday night in the men's championship steeplechase race, senior Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was 10th with a season-best time of 9:18.31. His time currently ranks 13th nationally. Freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was 16th in a time of 9:25.77.
In the men's championship 5,000 meter race, senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) was 13th in a time of 14:33.79. His time ranks 19th on the national list. Junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) was 16th in a time of 14:37.62.
At Calvin on Friday, senior Erick Holder (Marian, Ind./Eastbrook HS) was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 157-0. Freshman Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was sixth (155-4).
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

At the Hillsdale Gina Relays on Thursday, junior Autumn Vonk (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was ninth in the open 3,000 meter steeplechase in a season-best time of 11:59.60. In the women's open 5,000 meter run, sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) was eighth in a season-best time of 17:24.76.
On Friday, junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) took 21st in the championship steeplechase competition with a season-best time of 11:27.38. In the women's championship 5,000 meter run, senior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, Mn./St. Croix Preparatory HS) was 23rd in a time of 17:33.68.
At the Calvin Tune-Up Invitational Friday night, freshman Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) won the javelin throw with a career-best throw of 125-9. Freshman Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) was fifth with a throw of 98-0.
