ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin softball team fell at Alma on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights fell to the Scots 8-0 and 6-2. Calvin is now 12-14 on the season and Alma improves to 18-4.
"Tonight I felt Anna and Paige had good command on the mound but we were not very sharp defensively," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "Over the past few games, you can point to one bad inning where we have allowed things to get a little away from us and that has proven a big factor in the outcomes. Collectively we need to keep fighting one pitch at a time for a full seven innings."
Alma won game one with four runs in the third and fifth inning.
Sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) led the Knights with two hits. She also had six strikeouts in game one.
The Scots put five runs on the scoreboard in the first inning of game two and added another run in the top of the fourth inning.
Calvin did not go away and cut into the Alma lead in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) doubled to left field to score junior Jessica Brasser from first base. Freshman Mallory Hoatlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills) singled to shortstop to score Kristen Newman.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) pitched all seven innings for Calvin in game two.
Sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) had a game-high two hits in game two.
The Knights return to action on Friday at Franklin.
