NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In a key conference matchup, the Calvin women's lacrosse team prevailed 11-9 at Saint Mary's Tuesday evening.
The Knights improve to 4-5 overall and more importantly to 2-0 in the MIAA with the win. Saint Mary's drops to 5-6 overall and to 2-1 in league play.
The game was closely contested throughout. The lead changed hands four times in the first half with Calvin building a 3-1 lead on goals by sophomore Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Emily Cefarratt (Hinsdale, Il./Hinsdale Central HS) and junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS).
The Belles roared back with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. Goals from Davio and Ceferratt put Calvin back on top 5-4 but Saint Mary's tied the game at five on a free position goal by Kate Kelly with 1:36 left in the half.
The final seconds provided a frantic finish to the first half. Calvin freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) whipped in her 11th goal of the season with 12 seconds left but Saint Mary's won the draw control, roared down the field and scored on a shot by Kendra Osinski with just one second left on the clock, tying the game 6-6.
Calvin grabbed the momentum with the first three goals of the second half. The Knights carried the possession over the first 18 minutes of the second half. Sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wycoff, NJ/Indian Hills HS) scored on a feed from Cefarratti 6:47 into the second half. A minute-and-a-half later, Ceferratti slammed in her 27th goal of the season, giving Calvin an 8-6 lead. Ceferratti then set up sophomore Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) for a goal, giving the Knights a 9-6 lead with 11:29 left in regulation.
Saint Mary's countered with a pair of goals to creep within one with 5:40 left to play. The second goal was scored by Saint Mary's freshman standout Mary Singler - her MIAA-leading 33rd of the season.
Ceferratti stepped up moments later however, winning the draw control and then winning a free position shot which she converted, giving the Knights a 10-8 lead with 5:22 remaining.
With 3:32 left, Davio scored a key insurance goal on a pass from freshman Jaimie Van De Burg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Saint Mary's scored the final goal of the game on a shot by Claire Theisen with 1:17 left but the Knight defense stood tall in the final minute to seal the win.
"We knew this would be a tough game and we feel good about picking up another quality conference win on the road," said Calvin women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "Saint Mary's is a very strong unit. They are not the team we have seen the past few years. They forced us into positions on the field that we are not used to but to our credit, we competed and made the adjustments we needed to make. In the second half we started winning the 50-50 balls and our possession of the ball was very good. I thought we played a strong defensive game as well. Saint Mary's has dangerous scoring options and I thought we did a good job limiting their chances."
Ceferratti was superb throughout, finishing with four goals, three assists and five ground balls. She also forced three turnovers and won two draw controls.
Davio tallied her fourth hat trick of the season. Pepper had a goal and two assists. Tilma, Verrett and Einfeld all had one goal apiece. Junior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won six draw controls while Van De Burg won five. Calvin won 13 of the 21 draw controls and outshot Saint Mary's 30-13. Calvin also scooped up 25 ground balls to the 21 swiped up by the Belles. Junior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite School) and sophomore goalkeeper Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) had four ground balls apiece. Chalfant was credited with a pair of saves.
